Justin Abdelkader missed the final period-plus of the Detroit Red Wings’ Game 3 loss to Anaheim after being ejected. He’ll now sit out Games 4 and 5, as well.
NHL dean of discipline Brendan Shanahan announced the punishment for Abdelkader’s hit on the Ducks’ Toni Lydman following a phone hearing Sunday. Shanahan explained his decision:
“Abdelkader skates a considerable distance and elevates to violently check Lydman, making significant head contact. This is charging. … Abdelkader elevates at contact, turning what could have been a hard, full-body check into a high, violent check with significant contact to the head that caused an injury.”
Here’s the full video released by the NHL, explaining the decision:
Abdelkader is eligible to return for Game 6 of this series, which is scheduled for next Friday in Detroit. However, the Wings must win at least one of the two games they’ll play without Abdelkader’s services to push the series that far.
