Hockey Fan Land:
Justin Schultz is now an Edmonton Oiler!
I am proud of the Edmonton Oilers and their ability to land talented college defenseman Justin Schultz. Originally Drafted by the Anaheim Ducks, Schultz was unable to come to terms on a contract with the team. During the last week of May, 2012, Schultz officially "de-registered" from the University of Wisconsin triggering a process that made him an unrestricted free agent (UFA). According to league rules, from the time Anaheim was given notice of the de-registration from school, they had a 30-day exclusive window to try to sign him or trade him.
Anaheim was ultimately unable to sign him. On June 30, 2012, Schultz agreed to a two year entry-level contract with the Edmonton Oilers.
As an Edmonton Oilers fan I am proud of the club's ability to pursue such a talent. Defense has been a major sore spot for this club the past number of seasons. Schultz put a magnificent numbers in the college ranks, registering 113 points and 121 games (40 -73). Just about every NHL club wanted to sign this kid. Edmonton's pitch included phone calls from Wayne Gretzky and Paul Coffey. Shortly after, Justin Schultz signed a two-year deal with the Edmonton Oilers. $925,000 per, with a signing bonus of $92,500. Bonuses $2.85 million, for an overall cap hit of $3.775.
Yes, I am a little bit biased here as the Edmonton Oilers are the team cheer for. But I think it was easy to make this decision. This player will fit in perfectly with the other extremely young and talented pieces.
Thank you, for choosing Edmonton Justin Schultz and all the best!

The Oilers didn’t make anything remotely close to a splash on the first day of free agency. Instead the team chose three UFAs to re-sign in Ryan Smyth, Darcy Hordichuk and Jann Danis. But there is however the signing of Justin Schultz. So maybe they did make a splash afterall, even if it wasn’t for your typical proven, veteran, UFA player.
There are a number of attractive UFA...
The Edmonton Oilers signed a defenceman this morning, but it wasn’t the name that everyone has been waiting for. Early Saturday morning the team announced that they had signed Vancouver Giant defenceman David Musil. Musil was the Oilers second round pick at the 2011 NHL entry draft and while the Oilers didn’t need to sign him for another year since he is almost a lock to return...
Goaltender Yann Danis agreed to a one-year contract with the Edmonton Oilers on Sunday. Danis played for Oklahoma City, the Oilers’ AHL affiliate, this past season and had a 26-14-2 record with a 2.07 goals-against average, .924 save percentage and five shutouts in 43 games. He was named the AHL’s outstanding goalie and to the all-star team. Danis, 31, played in one game...

After making the hockey world wonder for the past few months we finally know the destination for former Badger defenseman Justin Schultz. He became a free agent after allowing his exclusive signing period with the Anahiem Ducks...
I shouldn't be so critical of Oilers management. They have been busy re-signing people. On Saturday, of course, the Oilers signed UFA Justin Schultz. On Sunday, the Oilers re-signed forward Ryan Smyth (2 years), goaltender Yann Danis (1 year) and forward Darcy Hordichuk. Other than that, no trades and no other UFA signings.

But before I head out, just a quick rumor: The Justin Schultz decision will be out in a few hours, and it sounds like the only two teams left in the battle for his services are the Edmonton Oilers and the Ottawa Senators.
Apparently, Schultz informed...
