It’s been a troubling year for Flyers’ winger James van Riemsdyk. After signing a lucrative contract extension last offseason, the 23 year old has gone on a twisty turny path. Injuries derailed van Riemsdyk’s 2011-2012 season and since, rumors have persisted that he is on the trading block.

At season’s end, JVR appeared on a list of injured Flyers that would require surgery. All except JVR have now undergone their surgeries and have begun to recover and rehab hoping to be ready to go in time for camp. But JVR has not had his surgery.

A report last week from Howard Eskin asserted that JVR was holding off his surgery because he didn’t want to get traded. That story was quickly refuted by Flyers GM and supreme commander Paul Holmgren. Holmgren cited an infection in van Riemsdyk’s foot (which was broken on March 1, one of various maladies to befall the former #2 overall pick) as the reason for the delay in surgery. Holmgren also denied that JVR was to be included in a package to Columbus for their Captain, Rick Nash.

So, a mere 4 days after saying the infection was to blame, Holmgren once again addressed the James van Riemsdyk situation today. Suddenly, JVR no longer requires surgery.

After consultation with various doctors regarding James’ hip injury, we have come to the conclusion that surgery is not necessary. We will treat James’ hip with alternative therapies and non-surgical procedures.

That’s a really quick turnaround and an even odder turn of events. Several rumors have blown this past week that have JVR packaged with Sean Couturier and Matt Read heading off to Columbus for Rick Nash.

Something strange is definitely afoot here, but I’m not sure what. Either the injury, originally termed a torn labrum isn’t as severe as once thought, the Flyers are trying to get a deal done or JVR simply doesn’t want to go under the knife.

It would be strange for the Flyers to be considering a deal for an injured player and to lie about it publicly. Any injury is going to be caught in a physical if a trade were to take place.

It’s also strange that we heard about this hip injury for months before it was officially announced by the team, and now it’s suddenly no big deal.

Whatever is going on, I certainly get the feeling that something is going to go down soon. July 1st is the first day of free agency in the NHL, and the Flyers have a few targets on the radar and not a whole lot of money to spend under the cap. A trade would obviously help them with that situation.Similar Posts:
