Tomas Kaberle recorded two assists, and Carey Price made a nice save on a penalty shot late in game as the Montreal Canadiens beat the New Jersey Devils 2-1. Kaberle was acquired by the Canadiens yesterday in a deal with the Hurricanes. The trade came a week after Canes GM Jim Rutherford blasted the defenseman for his poor play, so it wasn't a huge surprise.

“Tomas Kaberle better pick up his game or he won’t be in Carolina long”, said Rutherford on XM Radio at the end of November.

He also said Friday that he regretted his decision to sign Kaberle, telling the Raleigh News & Observer, "I should have known better."

"It's always tough to hear stuff like that," Kaberle said in response to a question about Rutherford's comments. "I don't really control what is going on on the outside. I don't really read papers and stuff like that, but I felt my game was a lot better the last few games."

Well, it looks like Kaberle is off to a good start in picking up his game. Kaberle's first assist came on the power-play in the 2nd period as Max Pacioretty scored to make it 1-0 Habs. His second assist made it 2-0 Montreal in the third period with 14:43 remaining.

"You have to jump in and you have to be ready," Kaberle said. "I tried to keep it simple out there. At the end of the (day) it's two points and that's what is most important for us."

New Jersey almost spoiled Kaberle's debut as they scored late in the third to make it 2-1. But Zach Parise was denied the tying goal on a penalty shot with less than a minute remaining in regulation.
