Ottawa Senators defenseman Erik Karlsson has returned to the lineup after being sidelined 2 1/2 months with a torn left Achilles tendon. Karlsson, last season's Norris Trophy winner as the NHL's top defenseman, played against the Washington Capitals on Thursday night, his first appearance since Pittsburgh's Matt Cooke stepped on the back of his leg on Feb. 13. Karlsson recorded a shot less than a minute into Thursday's game. He originally was expected to miss the rest of the season after surgery, but recently returned to practice. Karlsson sat out 31 games, returning in time to help Ottawa down the stretch in its push for the playoffs. He led NHL defensemen with 19 goals and 78 points last season. He had six goals and 10 points in 14 games this season entering Thursday.

Ottawa head coach Paul MacLean told reporters following Thursday’s morning skate that Karlsson will indeed be in the lineup Thursday night when the Sens take on the Washington Capitals. Karlsson...

Erik Karlsson makes miraculous recovery in Ottawa

The Ottawa Senators did not expect elite puck-rushing defenseman Erik Karlsson to return this season from his torn Achilles tendon. Normally such an injury requires three or four months of recovery after surgical repairs. But Karlsson has been back at practice this week, skating full tilt. If he plays Thursday, he will return to action after missing just 71 days and 31 games. He worked...

Sens clinch playoffs Karlsson returns

They might even wind up back in the same arena next week. Sergei Gonchar scored a power-play goal 47...

Travis Yost: Erik Karlsson Carries Ottawa to the Playoffs

Make sure to follow Travis on Twitter! -- All season long, the undermanned Ottawa Senators did just enough to stay inside of the top-eight in the Eastern Conference playoff race. But, it took the return of the reigning Norris Trophy winner to put them over the top. Erik Karlsson, who was feared lost for the regular season and beyond with a brutal achilles tendon injury suffered...

Erik Karlsson miraculously ready to return after suffering a sliced Achilles tendon

Erik Karlsson Returns?

Erik Karlsson is the best PR tool that the Senators organization is blessed with. Flyers-Senators Preview

The Ottawa Senators could finish as high as fifth in the Eastern Conference or as low as eighth, but they're just happy being in the playoffs. Having reigning Norris Trophy winner Erik Karlsson back is nice, too. Ottawa will try to avoid a season-high third straight home loss Saturday night against a Philadelphia Flyers team that's closing out a non-playoff season on a...

Senators-Capitals Preview
