from Joe Guillen of the Detroit Free Press, A representative of the Ilitch family’s business organization vowed on Wednesday to support the creation of a neighborhood advisory committee to give input on a wide range of development issues related to the proposed Red Wings arena downtown. The advisory committee’s structure and its responsibilities have not been finalized, but Gregg Solomon of Olympia Development of Michigan told members of the Detroit City Council at a public hearing Wednesday that the committee would be involved in issues such as parking, the arena’s design, vending and security. “Olympia is excited to pledge to work with City Council on the creation of a neighborhood advisory committee,” said Solomon, whose company would operate the new arena for Red Wings owners Mike and Marian Ilitch.... Several others spoke in support of the project, including Red Wings General Manager Ken Holland. Holland noted the team’s success and the downtown parades tha...

Wings notes: Zetterberg could return Friday

DETROIT -- There's a good chance the Red Wings will get their captain back for Friday's game. Henrik Zetterberg practiced with the team Thursday but his status won't be known until after the morning skate. "Had a good day today," Zetterberg said. "It's fun to skate again. I skated a little bit (Wednesday). Hopefully I'll feel good (Friday) after...

Confidence-building moment for Red Wings' Sheahan

During his freshman season at Notre Dame, in 2009-10, current Red Wings center Riley Sheahan was a hot prospect who had turned downed the Erie Otters of the Ontario Hockey League to play for the Fighting Irish. Notre Dame hockey had become a national power in a relatively short period of time under head coach Jeff Jackson, a Detroit native who took over the program in 2005. For years...

Expect more yelling and some discussion regarding the Red Wings’ follow-on rink today

Yesterday, the Free Press's Joe Guillen reported that Detroit's City Council will be reviewing the land transfer deal the City has to sign off upon for the Downtown Development Authority to expand the "downtown" footprint to include the Red Wings' follow-on rink, and as such, a coalition from the Cass Corridor area where the rink will be built will put forth...

Khan: Brian Rafalski’s comeback ends quickly

Wings' Henrik Zetterberg, Pavel Datsyuk out Tuesday

The Red Wings will be without star forwards Pavel Datsyuk and Henrik Zetterberg on Tuesday when they visit the Philadelphia Flyers. But Jimmy Howard could be available — and Joakim Andersson, also. That’s where the injury list stands heading into the Flyers game, which will be important in terms of the wild-card chase. Zetterberg was a late scratch for Sunday’s game against...

Rapping Red Wings: Uninspiring Effort Leaves Concerns About Detroit’s Mental State

Nobody knew it, but the Detroit Red Wings game on Tuesday night was over before it even began. Why? Detroit was playing the Philadelphia Flyers on the road, which is a locale the Red Wings have not won in since the 1997 Stanley Cup finals. History was going against them. After a rough 5-0 whitewash, things will stay that way at least until Detroit’s next trip to the Keystone State...

Red Wings-Flyers quick take: goalposts, dumb luck and an egg-laying effort

Oh, boy. Where do I start? It was better than the State of the Union and its rebuttal? The Red Wings just laid an absolute egg en route to a 5-0 loss to the Philadelphia Flyers, looking like a rudderless team minus Henrik Zetterberg, Pavel Datsyuk and Johan Franzen (and Jimmy Howard not in net, Cory Emmerton and Stephen Weiss also injured, Todd Bertuzzi still scratched, etc....

Inexperienced power play shorts out Red Wings offense

The formula for an effective power play has never changed as long as Daniel Alfredsson has been in the NHL. That’s 18 seasons, during which he’s been a big part of many successful Ottawa Senators teams, and been one of the better offensive players in the game. So Alfredsson knows how to put the puck in the net. “For any successful power play, as long as I’ve been in the...

from Ansar Khan of Mlive, Franzen was placed on short-term injured reserve (seven days minimum) and will miss at least a few more games. “Any time it’s a head injury -- we’ve been through it a number of times -- they’re hard things,” coach Mike Babcock said. “Obviously, Mule thought he was ready and then found out he wasn’t. “He’ll be out a few (games...
