In a night dedicated to Mattias Norstrom, the Los Angeles Kings came to play. Despite the infamous Blake appearance, most of the fans vitriol was targeted at summer trouble-maker Ilya Kovalchuk. Every time Kovalchuk touched the puck, the fans rained boos on him, and the Kings players made it just as difficult for him. The defense collapsed on him, and refused to allow any chance to make any moves. In the end, holding Kovalchuk to a mere 2 shots on goal in over 20 minutes on the ice.
Certainly things haven’t been going great for the New Jersey Devils this season, and the Kings were not about to allow them to turn it around on their watch. After jumping out to an early 1-0 lead on a goal by Justin Williams, the Kings doubled their lead on a goal from Michal Handzus. The 2nd goal was all the Kings would need, and even when the Devils netted their lone goal of the game, the Kings responded only 24 seconds later to regain their 2 goal lead. It was an impressive win, against a team that some thought would be competing to be at the top of the Eastern Conference. While that dream hasn’t been COMPLETELY destroyed, it’s safe to say it has taken quite a hit.
