Image Credit: Harry How, Getty Images The Los Angeles Kings have signed defenseman Slava Voynov to a new six-year contract, according to NHL.com. Voynov’s entry-level contract was set to expire after this season. The new deal is worth a reported $25 million. Voynov was Los Angeles’ second-round pick in the 2008 draft, a draft that was key to their current success. They acquired defenseman Drew Doughty with the No. 2 overall selection that year, and picked up Voynov a round later. Both have become key members of the Kings’ blueline, and will now be part of Los Angeles’ future for the next six years (Doughty inked an eight-year deal with the Kings last year). The Kings also selected defenseman Colten Teubert 13th overall in 2008, and he was dealt to Edmonton for Dustin Penner, another integral piece of Los Angeles’ 2012 Stanley Cup run. Voynov played in all 20 games during the Kings’ Cup run last year, notching a goal and two assists. This year, he played in all 18 games before the Kings exited in the Western Conference Final, and not before he’d etched his name in the franchise’s record books. His six postseason goals and four playoff game-winners were both team records for a defenseman. During the regular season, Voynov established himself as an offensive threat from the blueline, notching six goals and 25 points while earning regular power-play time as well. And that was only his second full NHL season (well, “full”, as this year was shortened to 48 games due to the lockout). For his career, Voynov has 14 goals, 36 points and a healthy +17 rating in 102 NHL games over the course of the last two seasons. The best may be still to come for the 23-year-old Chelyabinsk, Russia native, and the Kings have made sure he’s all theirs thanks to his new six-year deal.
