Kevin Klein is a little bit like the bingo free square.
Since making the leap to the NHL full-time in 2008, the Predators defenseman has played with a number of defensive partners – notably Francis Bouillon, Dan Hamhuis and Roman Josi.
At the start of the 2013 season, Klein has yet another defensive partner – veteran defenseman Scott Hannan.
Hannan, a veteran of over 900 NHL games, has been around the block a time or two. In fact, he was an NHL All Star in 2004.
Through their first three games together, Klein and Hannan have been on ice for 3 of the 7 goals their opponents have scored. However, both are in the top ten in shots blocked so far in the extremely young season, combining for 16 in just 3 games.
“He’s very vocal, so it makes it easy,” Klein said. “He’s very steady back there. I thought for the most part we gelled pretty easily. There’s still some things we need to work on, but that’s just the rough stuff of not playing for a while.”
Compared to some of Klein’s previous defensive partners, Hannan is definitely less likely to rush in and score a goal.
“Josi is a fantastic skater and likes to get up the ice a little more,” Klein said. ”(Hannan) is different. He plays a real physical game, which is awesome. He talks a lot, he does the simple things really well. He’s always there to back it up. He’s a great partner to work in unison with.”
While the two still clearly have adjusting to do on the ice, Hannan wasted no time standing up for his new defensive partner. Around halfway through the first period in the season opener against Columbus, the Blue Jackets’ Derek Dorsett checked Klein hard into the boards. Hannan immediately rushed in and dropped the gloves with Dorsett.
“He’s an all-around good team guy,” Klein said. “I told him he didn’t have to do that. It was a good hit. We both went in for the puck and he got the better of me. When you haven’t been going for the puck full-force, you’re not really expecting that. You definitely love to see a guy stick up for you in that situation, I’d do the same for him. It just shows what a character guy he is.”
Nashville head coach Barry Trotz was also pleased with his new defenseman standing up for Klein.
“That’s exactly what you want,” Trotz said. “We’ve got to protect each other. We’ve got to stick up for each other. Scott is a veteran player.”

Mason a fine option in tight schedule
Last season, Nashville Predators coach Barry Trotz had the luxury of going to the whip hand with his thoroughbred goalie Pekka Rinne without the fear of wearing him out.
In the early going, as his young team struggled to jell, Trotz rode Rinne hard to keep the Predators afloat. Late in the season, when he sensed that home-ice advantage for the Stanley Cupplayoffs would be crucial...

Three Minutes With: Preds prospect Zoltan Hetenyi…
During training camp last week, we sat down with Nashville Predators prospect Zoltan Hetenyi. The Hungarian goaltender was invited to Development Camp last summer and impressed the brass. As a result, he was offered a one-year contract within the organization. He’s been playing with the Predators’ ECHL affiliate, the Cincinnati Cyclones, ever since.

Couch notes from Nashville's 3-1 win over Minnesota
After improving in each of the first two games and settling for the loser point in each, the Predators made big strides in the final two periods against the Wild in Minnesota and broke into the win column for the first time this season by a 3-1 score.Chris Mason started his first game of the year for the Predators and limited the Wild to one goal on thirty shots, including several...
Preds manage just 13 shots, suffer first regulation loss of the season…
Sometimes it’s just isn’t your night.
That was definitely true on Thursday night for the Nashville Predators.
In front of 16,047 at Scottrade Center, the Blues thoroughly outplayed the Preds, beating them 3-0. Nashville managed a meesly 13 shots on goal and looked completely out of sync most of the game. They took too much time to make decisions, they had too many errant...

3rd period mistake proves costly in 3-1 loss to Nashville
I used to frequent a wide variety of message boards back in the day, one of the best was good ol' Fanhome. Fanhome was a site that had mini-message boards for all 30 of the league's teams and each board had a tight knit group of posters and some forums were more friendly than others. One team I must admit I have a weakness for is the Nashville Predators. I guess when...
Brad Ratgen: Decompressing and Second Guessing Already in this Shortened Season.
Coming into the game against Nashville, I thought it made perfect sense to put Harding back in net. He had the better of the two starts on opening weekend, in my opinion, and the Preds were playing their backup, Chris Mason, as Pekka Rinne had played the night before. However, Coach Mike Yeo, while seeming to imply that he was more impressed with Hardingâs first game than...
Predators Get First Win of the Season in Minnesota
The Preds snuck past the Minnesota Wild and Ryan Suter to get their first win of the 2013 abbreviated season. With goals by Spaling and Erat, Nashville competed all game but never looked like the best team on the ice. They had trouble handling Minnesota's top two lines and, in true Predators form, struggled to set up offensively. But none the less, the Preds avoided overtime...
