So much for Slovenia’s men’s hockey team just being happy to participate in its first Olympics. Anze Kopitar and company surprised Slovakia 3-1 on Saturday (video), giving Slovenia its first-ever win at this level. The most stunning part – and most worrisome for Slovak hockey – is that this wasn’t really some miracle goaltending performance. Slovenia actually fired more shots on goal (31-28) in the game and Slovakia never held a lead, as they merely avoided being shut out with a 3-1 goal late in the third period. Rok Ticar scored the first goal, Tomaz Razingar got the game-winner and Anze Kopitar iced it with a 3-0 tally. Slovenia scored those three goals in a dizzying span that lasted about six minutes of game time. It’s the kind of game that may haunt more than a few Slovak hockey players, including Jaroslav Halak, who allowed three goals on 31 shots. Slovenia’s team already came in on a relatively positive note in “only” losing to Russia 5-2, but now the country has a win tha...

Olympic men's hockey: Slovenia stuns Slovakia 3-1

Anze Kopitar scored the third of three goals in a six-minute stretch of the third period Saturday to give Slovenia a surprising 3-1 victory over usually steady Slovakia in its first Olympic hockey tournament. After two evenly played periods, the Slovenes were stronger and seemed more inspired in the third. Slovenia's Rok Ticar broke a scoreless tie 3:23 into the final period...

Russian player suggests Jonathan Quick dislodged net intentionally

Russian defenseman Slava Voynov is teammates with Jonathan Quick on the Los Angeles Kings, but that didn’t prevent him from calling out the United States goaltender after Saturday’s game. The American goalie slid to his left to make a save during the third period, and his leg dislodged the net slightly. The referees didn’t pick up on it right away, and as play continued, Russian...

USA most impressive team at tournament so far

Now that the preliminary round is over and every team has played three games, it is possible to sit back and evaluate each team’s performance, as well as compare them against each other to see who has impressed so far. Looking at each team under the same microscope, it’s become pretty evident that the United States has emerged as the team to beat coming out of the prelims, and...

Russia furious over disallowed goal

They aren’t the Soviet Union anymore, but Russia is still the one team the USA wants to beat, and the USA is still the team that Russia wants to beat. Which is why today’s victory for the American’s is stinging for the Russians, and they are expressing their disapproval for a call that they believed […]Continue reading...

Jonathan Quick starts in goal for US vs Russia

Goalie Jonathan Quick will make his second start of the Olympics when the U.S. men's hockey team faces host Russia on Saturday. U.S. coach Dan Bylsma chose his goalie Friday after practice for the biggest game of the preliminary round in Sochi. Quick made 22 saves in the Americans' 7-1 victory over Slovakia on Thursday, winning his Olympic debut. The Los Angeles Kings...

Canada beats Finland 2-1 in OT on Doughty's goal

Drew Doughty scored with 2:28 left in overtime to lift Canada to a 2-1 win over Finland on Sunday in the final preliminary round game of the men's Olympic hockey tournament. The defending gold medalists earned the No. 3 seed for the quarterfinals. The Finns will be seeded fourth among the final eight teams. Sweden gets the top seed as the only team to win all three of its preliminary...

Some Thursday thoughts on Sochi, etc.

One of my first impressions from Sochi is that Slovenia has cranked out a winter athlete just as dynamic as Anze Kopitar of the L.A. Kings. That run by downhill skier Tina Maze to tie for the Gold was epic. Great Olympic moment. Another (obvious one) is that Team USA has a pretty explosive offense, at least out of the gate. My question is whether the team can keep the puck out of...

Ryan Miller to start for USA vs. Slovenia, Jonathan Quick won't dress

Jonathan Quick has earned himself a day off. After leading the uSA to wins in the first two games including Saturday's thrilling victory over Russia, Quick will not dress on Sunday when the USA faces Slovenia to close out pool play. Ryan Miller will get the start and Jimmy Howard will suit up as the backup. At this point it's evident that Quick is the Americans' No...

Carter's hat trick leads Canada past Austria 6-0

After the final horn, Jeff Carter tried to give the game puck to Roberto Luongo in honor of the goalie's latest Olympic shutout. Luongo handed it right back, claiming Carter's hat trick was a bigger deal. Carter and Luongo both realize Canada still has plenty of time to pick up more souvenirs in Sochi, and they've all got their eyes on something a bit shinier than a...

Jason Lewis: Carter Hat Trick, Doughty Scores, Quick in Net Again

One can only hope that the performances of the LA Kings thus far continues and carries over when the teams return. First off, Jonathan Quick will get the start for Team USA in what should be the group decider against Russia tomorrow morning at 4:30AM PST, 7:30 EST. Many had wondered after Quick started game one against Slovakia if Miller would get the nod for the game against...

U.S. Men’s Olympic Hockey: Jonathan Quick Starting Against Russia

SOCHI, Russia — Jonathan Quick has played high-tension postseason games in several of the NHL’s most intimidating arenas over the last few seasons, and he came out holding the Stanley Cup above his head. That’s why U.S. coach Dan Bylsma is confident his goalie can handle a whole different level of pressure when the Americans take on the home team in Sochi. Quick will make his...

Jeff Carter leads Canada to victory over Austria.

Team Canada defeated Austria 6-0 at the Olympics in Sochi on Friday. Jeff Carter scored three goals in the second period for Canada leading them to a 6-0 victory over Austria on Friday. Carter capped off the first natural hat trick at the Olympics since 1988 with a goal at 14:33 of the second period to put Canada up 5-0. Carter’s unbelievable performance was executed in a total...

Eklund: Poll> Does Miller Get A Shot?

Quick question here as I am about to head back into a meeting with a key source. (rumor chart and blog update later on...) USA/Russia. WOW. This was a classic game and a gutsy game by so many players on Team USA. Guys like JVR, McDonaugh, Pavelski, Kane and of course TJ Oshie somehow willed this win like a Phoenix from the ashes... But none of it happens without Jonathan...

Anyone Surprised Jonathan Quick Will Start Again For Team USA And Not Ryan Miller?

Jonathan Quick to start in goal for U.S. tomorrow against Russia #teamusa #usah — USA Hockey (@usahockey) February 14, 2014

Is Slovakia on the decline as a hockey nation?

Four years ago, the Slovaks were the Cinderella Story. They beat Russia and Sweden en route to a fourth place finish in the Olympics. And yet, as surprising as that was, it didn’t come out of nowhere. They were a team with quite a few talented NHL players leading the charge. To compare them to the nation they just suffered a 3-1 loss to, Slovenia, which has only one NHLer in Anze...
