"You're adding our leading scorer, one of the top five scorers in the League, so I think it can't do anything but help."

Boy, Devils head coach Peter DeBoer was pretty spot on with his assessment at Thursday morning's media session of the return of Ilya Kovalchuk, wasn't he?

Kovalchuk was reportedly hindered by a herniated disc in his lower back since midway through New Jersey's first-round series with Florida. He sat out Game 2 of the Devils' second-round series with the Philadelphia Flyers with what the team described as a "lower-body injury."

Tonight though, he returned for his team's third tilt in front of the home crowd in Newark with a bang.

The Russian sniper had a hand in all three of New Jersey's goals, including a long stretch pass to Alex Ponikarovsky on the game-winning goal with just over two minutes to play in the first overtime session.

The Devils, who defeated the Flyers, 4-1 without their star winger in Game 2, needed extra time to outlast Philadelphia tonight. But Kovalchuk almost prevented the game from even getting that far. With New Jersey clinging to a 3-2 lead, Kovalchuk carried into the Philadelphia zone and fired a shot past Ilya Bryzgalov and off the iron.

The near-goal, which would have given the Devils a 4-2 lead, would have been Kovalchuk's fifth goal in nine games thus far in the 2012 postseason.

Just second later, Danny Briere, who seems to be the only Flyers' forward not seemingly still hungover from their long layoff after ousting the Penguins in the first round, scooped up a rebound off James van Riemsdyk's shot and tied the game roughly midway through the final period of regulation.

Just 20 seconds after helping set-up Patrik Elias' game-tying bomb on the power play in the first period, Kovalchuk took a feed from Travis Zajac in the middle of the Flyers' zone and blistered a wrist shot passed Bryzgalov's glove, giving the Devils a 2-1 lead.

The Devils, who hold a 2-1 series lead over the Flyers, take to the Rock again on Sunday, as they look to put a stranglehold on their state-line rivals.

Leaders lift Devils in Game 3 over Flyers

As the saying goes, it's playing for the name on the front of the jersey, not the one on the back, that's most crucial for success in the NHL playoffs. But in the case of the New Jersey Devils, it seems the additional letter on the front -- the "C" or "A" stitched into the upper left corner, just above the heart -- means a little something extra, too...

Devils Burn Flyers in OT, Take 2-1 Series Lead

Ilya Kovalchuk, after missing Game 2 with a lower body injury, certainly made his presence felt from the opening faceoff to the GWG in OT for the New Jersey Devils. Kovalchuck had an assist on NJ's first goal, he scored their 2nd goal, and had the assist on the game winner by Alexi Ponikarovsky with 2:39 left in overtime. The Flyers have only won one time this postseason when...

Game 2: Devils Don't Quit - Series Tied 1-1

"Tonight I'm planking but on Thursday it's all about Tebowing!!"   You couldn’t escape the fact that Ilya Kovalchuk wasn’t in the lineup last night, mainly because Pierre Maguire and Kenny Albert weren’t going to let us forget. Guess what, it didn’t matter. The Devils worked hard all night and found a way to get the job done. They kept their frustration...

WTF! Devils Score 4 Goals in the 3rd Period

That’s all the New Jersey Devils needed Tuesday night, as they scored four third-period goals to beat the Philadelphia Flyers 4-1 and even the Eastern Conference semifinals at 1-1. The Devils did it without the services of leading scorer Ilya Kovalchuk, who did not even travel to Philadelphia for Game 2 because of a lower-body injury, according to Devils general manager Lou Lamoriello...

Game 3: Devils Come Home - Series Tied 1-1

There was a lot of talk about Kovalchuk missing Game 2 both before and during the game on Tuesday. By the end of the game all that seemed to matter was that the Devils went into Philly, stayed focused and came away with a 4 goal 3rd period and knocked off the Flyers 4-1 which evened the series at 1 game a piece as this series shifts to the Prudential Center for games 3...

Flyers Have Their Backs Against the Wall After OT Loss

It was to be their final line change of the game. With Erik Gustaffson and Brayden Schenn caught, Ilya Kovalchuk launched a nifty long pass down the ice and found Alexei Ponikarovsky streaking toward the net 1-on-1 against Andreas Lilja. He took one shot that Bryzgalov stopped, but the puck bounced back to him and he slid it into the net for an overtime winner. Just like that the...

Devils won't be a pushover to Flyers in Round 2

After Philadelphia rolled over Pittsburgh in the opening round of the playoffs, there was a perception that the Flyers would be the team to beat in the Eastern Conference. Getting by New Jersey in the second round seemingly was a given after the No. 6 seed Devils needed seven games - and two overtimes in the last contest - to knock off Florida. Well, it's time to revise that...

NEWARK, N.J. - The Devils' Alexei Ponikarovsky went to the net when a couple of Flyers decided to go to the bench. His instinctive move paid off.
