The playing surface might be larger at the IIHF World Championships, but it would appear that "Kronwalled" sounds the same in any language. Getting "Kronwalled" also looks the same on any continent. Niklas Kronwall, who is playing for Sweden in the world championships this year, has become known for his bone-crunching checks and tooth-displacing hits across the NHL while wearing a Red Wings uniform, and for good reason. Take this clip from Sweden's first-round matchup against Latvia as poor Kaspars Saulietis gets absolutely "Kronwalled": Even the announcer recognizes the newest verb in Detroit-er's vocabulary. Luckily for the defenseman, this hit came over-seas; Brendan Shanahan has become particularly tough on "launching" checks during this years playoffs. "Launching" occurs when the checking player leaves his feet prior to hitting his target, thus creating a "launching" effect. Kronwall joined fellow Red Wings Henrik Zetterberg, Johan Franzen and Jonathan Ericsson on team Sweden. The tournament runs from May 4-20.
