The LA Kings had a guy named Kevin Ryder run their Twitter account during the second period of Game 4 against the San Jose Sharks. Ryder is on a show called "Kevin & Bean" on KROQ 106.7 FM. The show falls directly into the category of shock humor. Once Ryder took over mostly weak attempts at humor followed, but the controversy here is all about one Tweet that refers to Anze Kopitar being sexually assaulted. The Kings quickly removed the Tweet, but Sean Gentille took a screenshot.

It's one thing to be snarky and a bit edgy. It's another to use what boils down to a rape joke on an NHL team's Twitter account. Though Ryder is responsible for the Tweet itself, those behind LA's account and marketing team are responsible for allowing him to use it in the first place. We're not sure who thought it was a good idea or how the idea was approved, but here we are. If you go and look through Ryder's work, this isn't exactly a surprising outcome.

Perhaps the most disturbing aspect of this story is the fact Ryder's wife reportedly runs a charity for women which have been abused in relationships. You'd think Ryder of all people might know that sexual assault isn't a topic one should joke about.

Last year we gave LA plenty of credit for their new approach to the social media scene. Their Tweets were funny and original yet they always kept things tasteful. This year their act grew a bit tired. What was once fun and new now feels like an act we've all seen before. Now they decided letting a shock jock was the right way to run a professional organization's Twitter account. Not smart.

The Kings later apologized for the Tweet.

Kings expected to tweak forward lines for Game 5

LOS ANGELES After being limited to one goal in each of the last two games against the San Jose Sharks, Kings coach Darryl Sutter looks like he is ready to shake up his line combinations for the pivotal Game 5 on Thursday night at Staples Center. One goal is not going to win us many games, said forward Justin Williams. Plain and simple. Scorers got to score. Got to play better....

Dustin Penner Tweets Exactly What Everyone Is Thinking About Darren Rovell

Darren Rovell was doing his daily trolling of athletes and finally hit a little bump in road. Rovell Tweeted about Dustin Penner talking about how much he likes Taco Bell, and how the Kings can’t control him even though they have a sponsorship with McDonalds. Rovell does this a few hundred times a day, give or take, and usually doesn’t get called out for spouting off useless...

L.A. Kings let fan tweet for them for a period. Not a really good call.

We apologize for the tweets that came from a guest of our organization. LA Kings Twitter Account Goes In The Wrong Direction

from Chris Foster of the LA Times, The Kings' official Twitter account received a game misconduct penalty Tuesday … from the Kings' front office. Kevin Ryder, of KROQ's "Kevin & Bean" morning show, handled the Twitter posts for the Kings' Stanley Cup playoff game against the San Jose Sharks on Tuesday. He took over after the first period,...

LA Kings Tweet out sexual assault joke, issue apology

Kevin Ryder of the Kevin and Bean Morning Zoo show on LA’s KROQ took over the Los Angeles Kings Twitter Account during their game against the San Jose Sharks last night.  It turned out to be a really bad decision on the Kings part as Ryder made an off-color joke about sexual assault to describe a penalty.  The Kings quickly issued an apology and I think they will be more careful...

Kings dinged by ‘intent to blow’

The Los Angeles Kings dropped a 2-1 decision to the San Jose Sharks on Tuesday evening, allowing San Jose to tie their second-round series at 2 games apiece, and USA Today's Mike Brehm reports that referees' discretion played a role in the outcome of a game for the second time in two nights: Tuesday, the Los Angeles Kings' Dustin Penner scored to cut his team'...

The LA Kings Twitter account tweets out a sexual assault joke from a radio host

The Los Angeles Kings have had the best team Twitter account in sports.  Funny, irreverent, engaging, topical, not afraid to take a dig at their rivals, worth following even if you weren't a Kings fan... pretty much the opposite of every single other North American professional sports team that operates in the social media space. And then, for some reason, the Kings decided...

Did the Kings get screwed?

Wow! Looks like a blown call that went in the San Jose Sharks favor. I am not a fan of either team, but I want to see the games called correctly. It appears that Dustin Penner had scored a goal.

Sharks-Kings Preview

Kings goalie Jonathan Quick sometimes seems to be the only obstacle between San Jose and the Western Conference finals while the Sharks dominate much of their 2-2 series with the defending Stanley Cup champions. And if Quick needed any extra motivation to stop the Sharks again in the pivotal Game 5 on Thursday night, TJ Galiardi provided it. Galiardi accused the Conn Smythe Trophy...
