LA Kings make long-awaited playoff breakthrough

(Eds: APNewsNow. With AP Photos.) By GREG BEACHAM AP Sports Wrier Jarret Stoll says he only had about 140 text messages waiting for him a few minutes after he scored the overtime goal that sent the Los Angeles Kings into the second round of the playoffs for the first time in 11 years. If more of the Kings' long-suffering fans had his number, the veteran forward would be sifting through an avalanche of gratitude and excitement. The eighth-seeded Kings dramatically dispatched the Presidents' Trophy-winning Vancouver Canucks in five games, finally achieving something worthy of their potential after a seven-month struggle to find their game. Los Angeles' early-season struggles cost coach Terry Murray his job, but the Kings squeaked into the playoffs and promptly posted one of the biggest upsets in their 44-season history. The second-seeded St. Louis Blues are up next.
