Found December 21, 2011 on Rock the Red:
Ever since John Erskine had his breakout performance last season, a debate has been going on between Capitals bloggers, fans, and media: when the lineup is fully intact among defensemen, does Erskine or Jeff Schultz deserve to get the call on a nightly basis?  Under Bruce Boudreau, the answer was almost always Schultz.  Boudreau had seen what Schultz could do every night when he played with Mike Green extensively in Hershey, and so when given the choice, he went with Schultz. Since Dale Hunter took over as head coach almost a month ago, however, Schultz has fallen out of favor spectacularly.  In the six games under Hunter in which a defenseman, presumably Schultz or Erskine, could have been scratched, Schultz has sat five times and Erskine once, this past Tuesday against Nashville.  In the game that they both dressed for, Schultz saw a third of the ice time that Erskine did (3:55 to 12:56).  Which, of course, is silly, because Jeff Schultz is a better defenseman than John Er...

Do the Washington Capitals Pass Too Much?

If you’ve been in the stands for a Caps game the last two seasons recently, you’ve probably heard many of your fellow fans yell one (or all) of the following, especially while the Caps are on the Power Play: SHOOT THE PUCK! OH COME ON! SHOOT IT! DAMN IT, SHOOOOOT! Clearly, fans think the team moves the puck too much, passing up good shots in lieu of the ‘pretty play’...

Ovechkin is 'complete player' in Capitals' win

Alex Ovechkin hasn't been a stranger to physical play this season, oftentimes using hits to try to make a difference in games. With goals not coming as frequently as he would like, though, the Washington Capitals captain made it known that he's paid to score and not just hit. Tuesday ...

John Carlson thinks he’s smart

Lots of agreement from the Capitals here: Mike Knuble is the smartest dude in the dressing room, and John Carlson thinks he’s the smartest dude in the dressing room. Read full article >>

Ovechkin Needs To Bring His Game Every Night

from Tarik El-Bashir of the Washington Post, “When he’s getting scoring chances, hitting, bringing that energy, it fires everybody else up,” defenseman Karl Alzner said after a 4-1 victory, perhaps the Capitals’ most thorough of the Dale Hunter era. “He’s the most exciting guy in the league. “When,” Alzner added after a pause, “he’s on his game.” And there’s...

Capitals 4, Predators 1

Alex Ovechkin and Nicklas Backstrom scored first period goals, Alexander Semin added a third-period goal, and Michal Neuvirth stopped 20 shots as the Washington Capitals beat the Nashville Predators 4-1 on Tuesday night. Nashville lost for the first time in six games, and for the first time in 11 contests, had a game decided by more than one goal. The quirky 10-game streak was two...

Karl Alzner: Capitals’ Steal of the Summer?

The signing of Tomas Vokoun at $1.5 million was supposed to be the steal of the summer for the Washington Capitals. But it’s the much younger Karl Alzner’s two-year contract at only $2.57 million this summer that looks like it’s paying off first. Going into training camp this September, Alzner said he wanted to get off to a solid start, unlike the previous season where he...

Rapid Rewind: Vintage. Capitals 4, Predators 1

WASHINGTON - Nicklas Backstrom had a goal and an assist and Michal Neuvirth made 20 saves as the Washington Capitals rebounded and brought home a convincing 4-1 win over the Nashville Predators on Tuesday Night.  The Caps opened very well and never trailed, but fell back a bit in the middle part of the game before closing it out with authority.  In addition, for the first time...

Capitals Douse Red-Hot Predators 4-1, Break Nashville’s 5-Game Win Streak

Photo Credit: Patrick McDermott/Getty Images When Nashville’s deadly powerplay gets held with no goals on 5 attempts, things may not be looking bright. With goals from Ovechkin, Backstrom, Semin, and Brouwer, the Washington Capitals stopped the Predators cold in their tracks with a 4-1 win, ending Nashville’s 5-game win streak. Lindback took the loss for Nashville making 19 saves...

Capitals mark Knuble's 1,000th game, top Predators

Mike Knuble didn't record a goal or an assist. He didn't have a plus-rating and wasn't on the ice for a goal — or even that long. But the right wing playing his 1,000th career NHL game had a lot to do with the Washington Capitals' 4-1 victory over the ...

Ovechkin, Semin help Capitals slow down Preds

Alex Ovechkin and Nicklas Backstrom scored first period goals, Alexander Semin added a third-period goal, and Michal Neuvirth stopped 20 shots as the Washington Capitals beat the Nashville Predators 4-1 on Tuesday night.

Practice: Dec. 22

The Washington Capitals were on ice for a practice Thursday afternoon as they prepare to take on the New Jersey Devils Friday night in Newark.  Some updates from Kettler Capitals Iceplex: Mike Green skated before practice for about 30 minutes and then remained on ice for about 15 minutes into the practice, taking rushes with the other defensemen.  Green looked good in testing...

Hunter's man-to-man defensive scheme increases Capitals' accountability

Switching coaches on the fly in the middle of a season presents plenty of challenges. Dale Hunter has made changes to just about everything since taking over the Washington Capitals on Nov. 28 — perhaps none with more of a tactical difference than on defense. With assistant Jim Johnson helping ...

Capitals-Devils Preview

Consistency has eluded the Washington Capitals for much of this season, but Michal Neuvirth has been very steady lately. The Capitals' backup goaltender is expected to get a chance to continue his strong play Friday night against the New Jersey Devils, who hope the return of Patrik Elias will help them regain their scoring touch. Washington is 8-12-1 in its last 21, posting...

Ovechkin helps Caps cool off Preds

Alex Ovechkin and Nicklas Backstrom scored first period goals, Alexander Semin added a third-period goal, and Michal Neuvirth stopped 20 shots as the Washington Capitals beat the Nashville Predators 4-1 on Tuesday night.

Is Dale Hunter already a lame duck with Washington Capitals?

Darryl Sutter, introduced as the Los Angeles Kings' new head coach this week, is in the first year of a 3-year deal. Kirk Muller, the head coach of the Carolina Hurricanes, has a 4-year contract. Bruce Boudreau, behind the Anaheim Ducks bench, has the most temporary status of the these new hires: a two-year contract. When coaches are hired, they want a multi-year contract for...
