The Las Vegas Wranglers, a member of the Pacific Division in the Western Conference of the East Coast Hockey League (ECHL), are no strangers to extremely gimmicky but profoundly clever promotions/attention-grabbers. The Wranglers once had Mike Tyson sound the team’s siren before the ECHL Finals. More recently, the Wranglers were the franchise behind the “Indoor Winter Classic” which was supposed to help alleviate the pain brought on by the lengthy NHL lockout. The Wranglers are back at it again. This time, the goofy promotional stunt revolves entirely around its “Over 18 Night,” a staple of the many wacky antics of the Wranglers. On Feb. 4 for its match against the Colorado Eagles, Wranglers players will be rocking the below “topless” jerseys”:   Weird, wild stuff. Interesting look. The jerseys are modeled by Wranglers players Andrew Sarauer (#25, left) and Chris Francis (#12), and are explained as follows (via the Official Site of the Las Vegas Wranglers): “Going bottomless was simply out of the question,” said Wranglers President and Chief Operating Officer Billy Johnson. “Yuck.” The specialty Wranglers jersey, featuring a bare chest and sculpted abs, has a Wranglers crest tattooed over the right pectoral. Adorning the shoulders are a “topless hockey” and Wranglers word mark, with light arm hair filling out the details. “The guys have never looked to be in better shape,” Johnson said. “Nor have they appeared to be as identical.” Beyond the “Yuck” factor, going bottomless would be a bad idea far beyond simply aesthetic reasons or matters of taste. No way any man in his right mind is ever going to allow a razor sharp skate blade anywhere near his manhood. (Shudders) Whether it is teams painting their ice surface green, offering a job to Kris Humphries or putting out cheesy promo vids for an 80s Night, minor league hockey organizations, much like their minor league baseball counterparts, are always willing and able to go way outside the box to try and get butts in the seats. And they take full advantage of the freedom afforded them quite well to boot. And let us not forget the themed jerseys. The ugly, ugly themed jerseys. Hoo boy.
