On Thursday night, former Dodgers manager and beloved Los Angeles sports icon Tommy Lasorda participated in the ceremonial puck drop before the Los Angeles Kings took on the Columbus Blue Jackets. After the 85-year-old Hall of Famer trotted out to center ice to drop the puck as Kings captain Dustin Brown and Blue Jackets alternate captain Jack Johnson assumed the customary position, Lasorda turned to Brown, spoke with him for a few moments and then dropped the puck. Afterward, Lasorda shook Brown’s hand and without even a look at Johnson, turned and began walking away, snubbing him completely without any semblance of an acknowledgement. Given that Lasorda is getting up there in years, it could be ventured that perhaps he simply was a tad confused or even unaware of the custom that the individual performing the ceremonial puck drop should shake the hands of both players. Not so fast. Lasorda remains a wily old fella who apparently retains the spirit of a fierce, no-holds-barred competitor. First, the almost-uncomfortable-to-watch puck drop (via NHL.com): Lasorda was interviewed by FOX Sports West’s Patrick O’Neal during the game and he explained that his snub wasn’t a mistake. He did in on purpose. Why? “You do not talk to the opposition,” Lasorda said. Awesome. Here’s Lasorda dropping that piece of knowledge on O’Neal (at about the 40-second mark): Yeah, they broke the mold when they made Tommy Lasorda, that’s for sure.
