The Flyers are now 0-3 on the season in games that reach overtime or a shootout, this time dropping to the Tampa Bay Lightning 2-1 in overtime.

This game, however, had a completely different feel from any other game that the Flyers have played this season. It was a well-thought, hard-fought chess match. It was a battle of two coaches that knew how to counter each other’s moves.

The Lightning play the ever-so-boring 1-3-1 defense, which puts one “fore checking” forward at the opposing team’s blue line, three players lined up at the red line, and one defenseman playing sort of a deep safety position in their own zone. The defensive scheme is used to create turnovers in the neutral zone and lead to odd-man rushes.

However, the Flyers weren’t having any part of it. Whenever they got the puck, they would send it back to one of their defensemen and hold the puck in the zone for as long as it took. The referees blew the play dead after about 40 seconds the first time the Flyers used this tactic, because defenseman Braydon Coburn didn’t move the puck at all.

The Flyers eventually just skated around in their own zone, not playing into the Lightning’s scheme.

When Scott Hartnell scored about halfway into the second period, it changed the flow of the game for the better. The Lightning had to break from their 1-3-1 defensive scheme and try to fore-check to create opportunities. It eventually worked, as the home team netted a goal 7:41 into the third period to tie the game at one.

The Lightning would score halfway through the overtime period to take the victory, but the way they play defense may soon have to change. The 1-3-1 is extremely boring, and is a very strange defensive strategy. There will most likely be a new rule in place regarding that style of defense and countering it, and what is legal or not legal in a game.

Thank you, Tampa Bay.
