-- Mike Colligan with a must-read on the Bruins systems. [ THW ]
In the picture below, the Bruins dumped the puck to Douglas Murray’s (3) corner. He passed it to Matt Niskanen (2) behind the net and we see F2 attack the puck:
Niskanen’s easiest option under pressure is to fire the puck around the boards to the far-side winger. In this case, Beau Bennett (19) is seeing the play develop and skating hard to get in position for an outlet pass. The center Pascal Dupuis (9) is swinging into position for support.
Colligan's work here is so good. He shows how the Pens will respond as well.
-- @TPBAdam was quoted in this story about Ryan Mill. [ PG ]
We were probably Mill's toughest critics when he first started. He's tweaked his act, solid efforts by him of late.

from Scott Burnside of ESPN,
If now is not the time for Marc-Andre Fleury, then when?
Or more to the point, if it is not time now for the return of the longtime Penguins starter and former number one overall draft pick, then the answer "never"....

The Globe and Mail's James Mirtle reports that Pittsburgh Penguins captain Sidney Crosby, who will face the Boston Bruins without protection for his still-healing broken jaw, suffered an absolutely brutally vicious injury when he blocked Brooks Orpik's shot with his teeth, and he's going to face much more off-season dental work to restore his smile:
Roughly 10 of...
The Penguins owned the Bruins during the regular season. But does that mean anything for the Eastern Conference final?
Not according to Jack Edwards, who says the Bruins are a much, much better team than they were during the year’s first 48 games. Edwards phoned in for a Friday morning interview with WAAF to discuss the impending playoff series, and noted that Boston is playing...

Someone put this on twitter last night, I know it's old but it fits with the current Pittsburgh Penguins, especially with Sidney Crosby whining about the officiating after last night's game. Apparently, Sid bad mustache and all didn't watch the game between...
Jarome Iginla, you’re off the hook.
While Bruins fans might have entered the Eastern Conference finals with an axe to grind regarding Iginla’s no-trade drama at this year’s deadline, Matt Cooke has firmly moved atop any list of most-hated opposing players. Already despised for his career-ending hit on Marc Savard, Cooke was up to no good once again in Game 1.
His check from...
Pretty damn entertaining hockey game, I must say.
The Penguins 3-0 loss to the Bruins in Game One of the Eastern Conference Finals wasn't due to their opponent outhustling and/or outworking them.
It was just a good old-fashioned, hard-fought game that saw the Bruins capitalize on their chances, while the Penguins simply could not do the same.
Sure, you can nit-pick numerous...
Game 1 of the Eastern Conference Finals between the Pittsburgh Penguins and Boston Bruins got off to a bumpy start early in the second period. Penguins forward Matt Cooke delivered this crushing hit to Bruins defenseman Adam McQuaid, hitting him right in the numbers. Cooke was given a five-minute major and a game misconduct for the hit.
Later in the period, Brad Marchand hit...
One of these hits is worth a five minute major and game misconduct, and the other is worth only two minutes:
What's the difference?
It appears the fact that McQuaid laid on the ice and pretended he was hurt, while James Neal got up. No absolving Matt Cooke here, but that hit is not a five-minute major.
No word if Cooke will face suspension.
What a joke they gave this clown Pittsburgh Penguins forward Matt Cooke the Masterton Trophy. This guy has been suspended at least 31 games by the NHL for his acts of transgression.
I think this hit deserves a game suspension for the NHL's department of Players safety. I actually think that Krug did his teammate a favor by slowing down Cooke, or this would have been even uglier...
After what seemed like an eternity but in reality was only 8 days, the Penguins returned to the ice of the Consol Energy Center to take on the Boston Bruins in the Eastern Conference Final. Unfortunately, for Penguins fans, the night didn’t go as planned as the Bruins took game one 3 to 0. If nothing, the game proved to show that this series is going to be a long one.
One of the more heavily discussed topics in the playoffs right now is Pittsburgh's goaltending situation. For most of the season Marc-Andre Fleury has been the Penguins number one goalie. Tomas Vokoun was brought in last summer to be an experienced backup goalie and potentially somebody who is capable of carrying the number one job. During the regular season both goalies...
Currently, during Game One of the Boston Bruins and Pittsburgh Penguins, on CBC.ca, a "Sid-Cam" is being streamed. Basically, for the entire game, there is a camera on Sidney Crosby. Even when he's on the bench and during commercial breaks. Poor Crosby. Has no privacy. The only thing missing is if they followed the Penguins captain into the dressing room during period...
WILMINGTON, Mass. — The smile spread across Matt Bartkowski‘s face even before the question was finished.
How will it feel to play against his hometown Penguins, the team he rooted for as a youngster?
“I can’t believe how many times I’ve been asked that,” the Bruins rookie defenseman said with a laugh. “It’s going to be awesome.”
Especially if Boston upsets Pittsburgh...
If you're wondering why I did not have any scoring chances posted from the last round, it's a long story. I'll just say that I've had a limited amount of spare time the last few weeks and was not able to post any analysis of the second round. Despite that minor setback, I should be back in full force for the Conference Finals and will provide a closer look at the...
