Happy Fourth.   Matt Cooke update Via the PG, it looks like Matt Cooke may be moving on. General manager Ray Shero acknowledged Wednesday evening that precedent strongly suggests that, now that Cooke is about to be free to move on, he almost certainly will do so. "Most guys, if they get [to unrestricted free agency], there's more money, or they want a change," Shero said. Totally okay with this move. But speaking of that... Targets @hockeymeesh had a good write up on Pens potential targets. [ thw ] Boyd Gordon – Another man on the list should be faceoff specialist Boyd Gordon. As a former first round pick (17th overall in 2002), Gordon has found his niche in the NHL when it comes to faceoffs and penalty killing. He won over 57% of his faceoffs last year for Phoenix and also averaged 2:51 of PK time per game to lead the team’s forwards in both categories Meesh mentions four others including probably our number one choice, Max Lapierre. A guy like Max Lapierre would be a great replacement for Cooke. He's a great on ice troll, and his reputation isn't completely polarizing like Matt Cooke's. Surprise moves The free agent class is a bit of a joke, but there are some surprise things already occuring. Example, the Toronto Maple Leafs bought out Mikhail Grabovski. [ Eye on Hockey ] Because of the Cap going down some teams are getting a little desperate, so with four million to spend, Shero may get a chance to make a move on a player that another team has to get rid of.  Grabovski has scored 61 goals in the last three years, BTW. Simon Despres  A good column by Mike Colligan on Despres. [ THW ] The issue is that while the Penguins made the decision to keep Despres at the NHL level, they didn’t put him in a situation to contribute and deliver any value.  You can’t enjoy a nice bottle of wine by just placing it in the middle of the table. That is the best paragraph on the Internet so far this year. The second best thing about the Colligan article was that the title of the column "Simon Despres:Arrested Development," led some people to believe Simon Despres was arrested.   Saw somewhere that Simon Despres got arrested... Praying it's not true he couldve been a younger less turnover prone kris Letang #LetangJr — Ben Santilli (@Bsantilli27) July 3, 2013     Yikes.
