John Tavares scored two goals and had two assist as the Islanders defeated the Carolina Hurricanes 5-2 at the RBC Center. Kevin Poulin stopped 21 shots for the Islanders and posted a .913 save percentage and moved to eight points out of a playoff spot.

The Islanders jumped on the board early after Jay Harrison was called for delay of game at the 5:14 mark. 35 seconds into the ensuing power play PA Perenteau fired a wrist shot past Cam Ward to make it a 1-0 Islanders lead. The score would remain the same until the second period. A hooking call Riley Nash gave the Islanders another power play opportunity, and at this point they had already had three previous chances.  Mark Streit had his shot deflected, by Jordan Staal, and it went right to Matt Moulson in the slot who fired it past Ward.

The Islanders maintained their 2-0 lead through the second period and were looking to close out the game in the third, the Hurricanes had other plans. 3:15 into the period Brent Sutter fired a backhand shot over Poulin and brought the Canes to within one. Three minutes later they struck again, this time on the power play. A mad scramble in front of the net forced Poulin out of position and Tim Brent was able to wrap around behind the net and put the puck in off an Islander defenseman’s skate to tie the game.

The Hurricanes seemed to have gained the momentum, but less than a minute later it was John Tavares to the rescue, giving his team the lead once again. Ward played the puck poorly, allowing Matt Moulson to grab the puck and quickly get a pass over to Tavares who buried the shot. The Islanders added two empty net goals by Kyle Okposo and Tavares to seal the win.
