PLAYERS: Gary BettmanBill Daly
Ice_hockey_f4d4
The more I think about the premise behind Gary Bettman and the Board of Governors’ desire to lock out their players for a third time in eighteen seasons and the second time in eight years, the more I think that the NHL gods must be crazy. The NHL ceased operations for an entire season to bring labor costs down, ensuring that the players would make only a certain percentage of pennies on the hockey-related dollar, with that percentage linked by iron chains to league-wide revenues. The current CBA wasn’t so much collectively bargained as it was bullied, bulldozed and eventually written by Bill Daly and a group of turncoats who had so sold out their union that would-be NHL executive director Ted Saskin and his cronies did exactly the opposite of what super PAC’s insist “union bosses” desire to accomplish, instead nodding their heads to every suggestion that Daly and the NHL made while completely acquiescing to their opponents’ demands in secret. Especially given that fans were lied ...

Very interesting: NHLPA’s proposal included an ‘Industry Growth Fund’ that threw Bettman a bone

This is particularly interesting. According to the New York Times’ Jeff Z. Klein, part of the NHLPA’s CBA proposal, which hasn’t been revealed to the public (I think the PA’s actually doing itself a disservice by not sharing the details thereof), includes a specific fund dedicated to revenue-sharing which actually gives Gary Bettman a bit of a bone in terms of shaping the...

Another NHL Lockout Possible as Stubbornness, Greed of Owners Continues to Hurt League

Labor disputes and the fear of a lockout continue to plague the NHL even after a full week of negotiations and proposals. This is third lockout scare in NHL’s commissioner Gary Bettman’s tenure. If a lockout occurs, it would be the second in less than 10 years. This certainly isn’t winning him any support from fans and players, yet it doesn’t seem to have pushed Bettman...

The NHL’s proposal demands an NHLPA bailout with nothing offered in return for player givebacks

In a world that doesn’t include Gary Bettman’s rhetoric, the concept of the NHL locking out its players eight years after canceling an entire season to achieve “cost certainty” should make no sense. In any business of, let’s say, performance venues where its 30 franchises’ labor costs were capped to a reasonable percentage of business-wide revenues, where those revenues...

Gap Remains Between NHL Owners, NHLPA in CBA Negotiations

Twenty-four hours after receiving a CBA proposal from the NHLPA, NHL Commissioner Gary Bettman told NHL.com that there is still a “wide gap” between the two parties in terms of the economic system.   “I think it’s fair to say that we value the [Union's] proposal and what it means in terms of its economics differently than the Players’ Association does,” Bettman told...

Is Gary Bettman the lockout commissioner?

I think it's a good question - under the tutelage of Gary Bettman he has presided over two NHL work stoppages since he took over the NHL League Commissioner in February 1, 1993. There is a very good chance that the NHL is going to have their third lockout under the leadership of Gary Bettman. Another dubious honor Bettman holds is that the NHL is the only professional sport...

Red Wings overnight report: talking about the lockout as it applies to training camp’s bottom line

We haven’t even gotten to the “lockout” portion of the present-day CBA showdown between Gary Bettman, the Board of Governors and owners and the NHLPA yet, and I already found myself walking around the grocery store on Monday night with a scowl on my face. I would think about the utter ridiculousness of the owners coming to the players and demanding a huge “bailout” without...

NHL labor talks to resume with wide gap to bridge

TORONTO (AP) -- NHL labor talks are set to resume with a wide gap remaining and time running out to avoid a potential lockout. NHL Players' Association executive director Don Fehr and NHL commissioner Gary Bettman are scheduled to be back at the negotiating table at the union's headquarters in Toronto on Wednesday. It will mark the first time in a week the respective leaders...

Richard Cloutier: Don't Blame Gary

Hi friends. Hope you are all having the most amazing Sunday. I am working on a huge, awesome, super-cool blog that's gonna get all of Hockeybuzz in an uproar...but for now, I offer this thought. I read Twitter constantly, and right now I must see 1,000 Tweets a day blaming Gary Bettman for the NHL labor situation. Why? I don't get it. Bettman is...well, there'...

The Bottom Line Is The Owners Want More Money

from Ed Willes of the Vancouver Province, The owners want more money. This is all you need to know about the current impasse. Eight years after the game was shut down for a season, the owners and their henchman Gary Bettman are back. They got everything they wanted last time - a reduction in salaries, a hard cap, entry-level restrictions, and all with only modest revenue sharing...

The Lockout Commissioner

from Jack Todd at the Montreal Gazette, You get the feeling that Gary Bettman loves his lockouts. This is Bettman’s thing. Shut down the league. Grind the players to powder. Go back to the owners and get his own salary bumped up for having satisfied the owners’ greed. Then come back five or 10 years later and say that the salary system he shut down the league to get is unworkable...

Continued CBA Negotiations; And Boo Nieves

Steve Zipay is reporting that NHL commissioner Gary Bettman and NHLPA head Donald Fehr will continue negotiations on a new CBA once again tomorrow at 1PM in Toronto. As James told us yesterday, as many as 8 owners may very well be accepting of what the NHLPA is offering so a productive day tomorrow for Bettman and Fehr could mean that both sides could be pretty close to a new deal...

Hockey Chutzpah and the Looney Lockout

Sidney Crosby, Alex Ovechkin and Gary Bettman have infringed on the end of summer and there’s no end in sight. Summer isn’t over, yet hockey fans are wondering if they should pack up the sunscreen and swimsuits just yet for skates and snow gear. Training camp is just weeks away, or is it? Kudos for  the Russian hockey “activist” Alex Ovechkin for making efforts to save the...

Gary Bettman Is Trying To Be David Stern Despite Not Being David Stern

With a lockout looming and looking more certain as each day passes, the NHL’s universe is quickly splitting into the standard factions of “It’s the greedy owners’ fault!” vs. “It’s those stupid players’ fault!” as the people caught in between try to figure out how this could happen just one year after the NFL and NBA terrified their fans. The answer, according to...

Devils Advocate: NHL Owners Have a Point

It seems like just yesterday the news broke that the 2004 season was not to be, and now like deja vu a lockout is staring us in the face yet again.  The general consensus among NHL fans and media alike is that if the season starts late, or even worse is canceled, it is more a result of the greedy owners and their egotistical figurehead, Gary Bettman, looking to milk every last penny...

Gap Between NHL and NHLPA Looking Insurmountable

There are now less than thirty days before the owner's September 15 deadline to have a new collective bargaining agreement in place for the NHL. Meanwhile, what appeared to be progress made earlier this past week was rapidly squandered when news broke that the gap between the NHL and NHLPA is quite immense in terms of cash and desires. So you do the math; this isn't looking...
