Found October 29, 2011 on Black Dog Hates Skunks:
Ten games in and the Oilers are first in the conference and sitting at 6-2-2. A fantastic start and except for the last two games its been bought and paid for. Of course 4-4-2 is a lot different animal than 6-2-2 but then again early on the Oilers had a couple of games where they outchanced the opposition and didn't get the two points so I'm not going to pick nits here. Is this the best team in the conference? No of course not. Are they a playoff team? Unlikely. They've banked a lot of points at home but they are about to hit the road and my guess is they will find it tougher sledding there. Are they better than everyone figured them for? Yes. I figured them to be ~ 25th or so and I had a lot of people say I was mental even for that. A lot of folks have them pegged for last overall, again.I was trying to find a post I remembered writing this summer where I was trying to figure out how this club could perform. I finally found itHere's the key passage:I think the Oiler...

Ryan Nugent-Hopkins and Ryan Smyth each have five goals, followed by Jordan Eberle and the highly...

Goaltending One Of The Good Stories In Edmonton

from Jim Matheson of the Edmonton Journal, The trick for an NHL team to win many games before Halloween is to be treated to strong performances by the club’s masked men. As the Edmonton Oilers (6-2-0-2) prepare for their best October in 10 years — they were 9-4-1 in the first month of the 2001-02 season — their goaltending has been stellar. Nikolai Khabibulin...

Puck Daddy chats with Nikolai Khabibulin about great start, Oilers’ young stars, old NHL goalies, Winnipeg and Phoenix

Has there been a more surprising resurgence in the NHL this season than that of Nikolai Khabibulin? Last year saw the Edmonton Oilers goaltender playing in the shadow of his DUI charges from Feb. 2010, for which he'd eventually spend 15 days in an Arizona detention facility. He played 47 games for the Oilers in 2010-11, going 10-32-4 with an .890 save percentage in an injury...

G11 Blues at Oilers

This is Garry Unger. He was the second bona fide "superstar" for the St. Louis Blues (the first was Red Berenson). Unger had a fine NHL career; although well short of a HOFer, Unger's ability to score goals made him one of the NHL's best players in the Western Division for most of his career. Unger's career took some time to take off, owing mostly to impatience...
