Luke Schenn says the last time he was a healthy scratch, he was just 19. He thought it was just once. Actually, it’s a dozen times: six times in Toronto under Ron Wilson and six times later under Randy Carlyle. Suffice to say, the 23-year-old Flyers defenseman isn’t used to sitting in the press box when others are on the ice. Peter Laviolette may have wanted to scratch Schenn in the past for his inconsistent play and costly turnovers that seemingly resulted in goals within seconds, but for whatever reason, chose not to. Not so with Craig Berube. Despite lengthy on-ice sessions, sometimes before and sometimes after practice, Schenn will again be scratched Tuesday night in Carolina when the Flyers meet the Hurricanes. “It’s a little rare,” Schenn said. “I don’t like being in this situation. But at the same time, I am not losing any confidence because of it. I’m not that concerned. Well, concerned is the wrong word, I guess. I was always taught that you worry about the things you can control. I don’t choose who is playing. I will continue to work hard and make the most of it and get better.” His extra sessions with Ian Laperriere are designed to improve his footwork and general quickness around the net. He’s a solid hitter and a decent shot blocker, but the fact remains that Schenn still commits too many gaffes with the puck and is often slow to react to the play before a goal is scored with him watching or wondering what happened. Asked specifically what the coaching staff said it wants from him during this time right now, Schenn was evasive. “They’ve never come up to me and said something about my skating,” he said. “It’s been me voluntarily working on it. The way the game is today, skating is a big part of it. No matter how many minutes I played, I always try to put in a little extra time after practice.”
