In the first period, Michigan State goaltender Will Yanakeff played very well; in the second, he was even better. The third period? He was outstanding in stopping 14 shots to complete a solid 40-save effort in leading the Spartans to a 3-2 Central Collegiate Hockey Association victory over No. 5/6 Western Michigan in the usual loud and chaotic atmosphere at Lawson Arena.

Magic Johnson, Michigan State's honorary captain at the Carrier Classic, has donated $1 million to the athletic department. He made the announcement at a team breakfast Friday. This is Johnson's first major donation to the school. Athletic director Mark Hollis didn't have immediate plans for the money.
