Marcus Pettersson Ready for Opportunity on Penguins Power Play
USA TODAY Sports

After failing to record a power play goal in their 10th consecutive game, the Pittsburgh Penguins are looking for new options to get the juices flowing.

One option that the Penguins have given a shot to is Kris Letang back on the first unit alongside Erik Karlsson.

With Letang moved back up to the first man advantage unit, that left a spot open for Marcus Pettersson to step in an quarterback the second unit.

The Penguins second power play group may only see 30-45 seconds per chance, sometimes it’s even less than that, but Pettersson is a completely new name for the man advantage.

Pettersson says this is new spot for him, but he should be comfortable in his position.

“Just try to keep it simple,” Pettersson said. “Haven’t had many reps on it, but I know the schemes. I know what we’re looking for and what other teams do.”

Before the season started, Pettersson said he hoped to be utilized in more situations; while he wasn’t expecting a power play role, he has some all-time greats to learn from.

“I don’t think I had the power play in mind with two of the best guys in the league,” Pettersson said. “Just try to keep it simple and be ready if my name is called.”

Pettersson has spent all season sharing a blue line with Karlsson, and he says he’s picked up a few pointers along the way.

“Just how to be a threat up there and move,” Pettersson said. “When you’re on the power play it’s important to know how to move.”

The Penguins really like the way Pettersson utilizes his size and mobility and is arguably why he was given such a role.

Pettersson may not see a ton of time on the power play thanks to the way the first unit utilizes their time, but the Penguins truly are trying everything they can imagine.
