Yesterday on a near picture perfect day in Pittsburgh the city and the Penguins unveiled a statue of Penguins great and now part owner Mario Lemieux.  Lemieux is one of the biggest reason that the city has the Consol Energy Center and why we still have a hockey team.  He was one of the best to ever play the game anywhere and will always be a legend in Pittsburgh.  And now he will be forever bronzed in front of the arena he was instrumental in bringing into the city.

In his career scored 690 goals and 1,723 points. He won a lot of awards while in Pittsburgh as well:

  • 6 Art Ross Trophies
  • 4 Lester B. Pearson Awards
  • 3 Hart Trophies (MVP)
  •  2 Conn Smythe Trophies
  • 1 Calder Trophy (rookie of the year)
  • 1 Olympic Gold Medal
  • and don’t forget the 3 Stanley Cup championships – 2 as a player and 1 as an owner

He is one of the most loved sports figures in the city of Pittsburgh, a place he has called home for a lot of years.

“That’s why I decided to stay here. I love the people here,” he said. “I can go anywhere in the town and people say hello and respect my privacy, which is the most important for me. That’s why I love living here. I can go play golf and people are very respectful of my privacy and my time. That’s why I decided to stay here and live here and raise my four kids here.”

And the city of Pittsburgh loves him too, and will never forget him as he is immortalized in the city for a very long time.
