The New York Islanders officially announced Thursday on Twitter that defenseman Mark Streit will not play at all this season.

This decision seemed all but inevitable given how few games remain this season, but it is obviously upsetting for Streit to miss an entire year.
In terms of logic this is obviously the right thing to do by the Islanders, as they are out of the playoff hunt and need to start looking towards next season. Now Streit will have all of the off-season to recover and should be back to about full health come next years camp.
Another benefit that comes out of this is that Streit won’t come in this last few games and steal any ice time from the younger players who the Islanders are still evaluating and who are still learning by playing at the NHL level.
Streit is most valuable on the power play where he can unleash lasers from the blue line, but the Islanders have been pretty good when man up this year, placing 14th in the NHL.
In other Islanders news Rob Schremp returns to the Island Thursday night with his new team the Atlanta Thrashers. Schremp was one of the most liked players on the Islanders team and I doubt there will be any hard feelings towards him, especially considering it was not his decision to leave.
