As much as the Flyers prepared for the NHL’s best team, the start of the game took them off guard. The St. Louis Blues were all over the place before the Flyers buckled down and got the better of them in a 4-1 win, extending their victorious streak to five. “I’ve got to be honest, it felt like they had seven guys on the ice in the first period,” said Jake Voracek, who notched his 19th goal of the season in the third period. “They were everywhere. I was like, ‘Wow, it’s going to be a long night.’ But I think that we started to skate a little bit better the last five minutes of the period, and we carried it over in the second and in the third.” Early in the game, the Flyers relied heavily on Steve Mason, who made 32 saves in his 30th win of the season. In the Flyers’ hot streak, the 25-year-old goalie accounts for four of the wins, with a 1.50 goals-against average and .948 save percentage in that span. “Anytime you’re gonna win it’s a team thing, though, so I’m not going to take any of the credit,” said Mason, who was tested 13 times in the first period. “You just try to do your job when you’re playing, and right now, we’re rolling along nicely, and the wins are coming. It’s a stat but it’s a team stat, so it’s a good job for the team.” The Flyers thought they had caught a break when Barret Jackman took a tripping penalty, sending Philadelphia to the first of five power plays. Instead, the Blues were off in a flash with an odd-man rush. Kevin Shattenkirk passed the disc to Jaden Schwartz for his 22nd goal of the season. It was the Flyers’ league-leading 11th shorthanded goal allowed. The Flyers survived the rest of the period, with Mason keeping them alive.
