Matt Zaba, a young goaltender of the Rangers’, just signed a contract yesterday to play in the Italian professional hockey league of Serie A on HC Interspar Bolzano-Bozen Foxes.

Zaba will get the starting job there for the Foxes. The team, commonly known as HC Bolzano, has been looking for a goaltender and they believe they found it in Zaba.

Zaba during his brief NHL play

Matt was selected in the 8th Round of the 2003 NHL Entry Draft and didn’t see NHL action until this past season. Zaba replaced Henrik Lundqvist and played the last 34 minutes in a losing effort to the Montreal Candiens. King Henrik was replaced after only 26 minutes, but also 4 goals. Matt stopped 14 of 16 shots and received zero support as the Rangers lost 0-6.
At the same time, Zaba held the distinct honor of being one of the rare players to go from the ECHL to the NHL in the same year.

At the end of the 2009-2010 season Matt became an Unrestricted Free Agent and wasn’t really feeling offers from many teams. Matt Zaba will now also be updated in the 2010 Free Agents list up at the top of the page.

I hope the best for Matt and that he turns his career around to find the NHL soon.
