In the 2009-10 NHL season, Cody McLeod and Matt Hendricks were linemates, buddies, hockey twins. They made a living playing the same type of game. Tonight at the Pepsi Center, with McLeod in his familiar Avs’ sweater and Hendricks donning his Washington Caps duds in his first game back in Denver, those guys traded punches. Serious punches. Good, old-fashioned scrap between two guys who had dinner and a couple of beers in Denver on Friday night.
“He hit me once there and I kind of asked him to go off the draw, but he kind of declined. We drew that penalty and he was yelling at me,” McLeod said after the Avs’ 2-1 win. “When you get hit in the face a couple times, you kind of get mad and start swinging back, right? Part of the job. Try to get some energy in the building. I thought we picked up our game after it, so it was good.”
Said Hendricks: “There’s no friends out there during the game. I was trying to get some momentum for the team. It didn’t work tonight.”
