In the 2009-10 NHL season, Cody McLeod and Matt Hendricks were linemates, buddies, hockey twins. They made a living playing the same type of game. Tonight at the Pepsi Center, with McLeod in his familiar Avs’ sweater and Hendricks donning his Washington Caps duds in his first game back in Denver, those guys traded punches. Serious punches. Good, old-fashioned scrap between two guys who had dinner and a couple of beers in Denver on Friday night. “He hit me once there and I kind of asked him to go off the draw, but he kind of declined. We drew that penalty and he was yelling at me,” McLeod said after the Avs’ 2-1 win. “When you get hit in the face a couple times, you kind of get mad and start swinging back, right? Part of the job. Try to get some energy in the building. I thought we picked up our game after it, so it was good.” Said Hendricks: “There’s no friends out there during the game. I was trying to get some momentum for the team. It didn’t work tonight.” Avs coach Joe Sacco: “...

Washington Capitals - A Tale of Two Goalies

During the trading season, everyone in the hockey world was sending kudos to Washington’s General Manager, George McPhee for his acquisition of Florida’s Tomas Vokoun. In fact, Washington’s NBC 4 said: “If there was an award for an off-season NHL MVP, it may have to go to Capitals general manager George McPhee” when he signed the veteran goaltender for the bargain price...

Avalanche 2, Capitals 1

Cody McLeod and Erik Johnson both scored their first goals of the season, and Jean-Sebastian Giguere had 25 saves as the Colorado Avalanche beat the Washington Capitals 2-1 on Saturday night for their fifth straight home victory. Washington's Alexander Semin forged a 1-1 tie with a shot from the center of the right circle that sailed into the net over Giguere's left shoulder...

Video- Michal Neuvirth With The Bad Goal Of The Night

I’ve posted the game highlights video of the Capitals/Avalanche game because the goal is at the very beginning and you see a replay of it too.

Mike Green travels with Capitals to Denver, but doesn't skate

DENVER — Just as the team promised, injured defenseman Mike Green joined the Washington Capitals in Colorado. But the plan was for him to skate, too — something that did not happen Saturday morning. Green, who missed his 17th straight game Saturday night with a strained right groin, saw a ...

Lapierre hit on Wilson still irks Avalanche

With Kyle Quincey out tonight with a groin injury, the Avalanche is, in my mind opinion, missing its top two defensemen. Ryan Wilson, who went from undrafted free agent to a top-four D-man for any NHL team, remains out with a head injury and Vancouver’s Max Lapierre goes unpunished. Wilson’s head was smashed against the glass by Lapierre in a game last week in Vancouver. No penalty...

Change at top for Capitals hasn't lit a fire under scorers

DENVER — Three goals. Three games. One win thrown into the mix to engender some optimism, but the Washington Capitals seem to be lacking answers for what's wrong on offense. The talent is there. Alex Ovechkin, Nicklas Backstrom and Alexander Semin make up what should be a dangerous top line, ...

Practice: Dec. 19

The Washington Capitals were on ice Monday morning at 10:30 as they prepare for Tuesday night's game with the Nashville Predators.  Some updates from Kettler Capitals Iceplex: Mike Green skated by himself for about 40 minutes before practice began, and left the ice as soon as the rest of his teammates came on for practice.  Dale Hunter would not provide an update on Green...

Avs top Caps for fifth straight home win (AP)

Cody McLeod and Erik Johnson both scored their first goals of the season, and Jean-Sebastian Giguere had 25 saves as the Colorado Avalanche beat the Washington Capitals 2-1 on Saturday night for their fifth straight home victory. Washington's Alexander Semin forged a 1-1 tie with a shot from the center of the right circle that sailed into the net over Giguere's left shoulder at 13:09 of...

Michal Neuvirth rewarded for shutout with start against Avalanche on Saturday

DENVER — Tomas Vokoun was understandably frustrated about his game earlier this week following a rough performance — four goals on 21 shots — against the Philadelphia Flyers. The veteran Washington Capitals goaltender said he knows himself pretty well — and that getting right back between the pipes to atone ...

Reunions on tap when Avs host Capitals at Pepsi Center

The Avalanche didn't practice Friday, and no insight about tonight's lineup against the Washington Capitals was revealed.

Johnson scores deciding goal in Avs' win over Caps

Cody McLeod and Erik Johnson both scored their first goals of the season, and Jean-Sebastian Giguere had 25 saves as the Colorado Avalanche beat the Washington Capitals 2-1 on Saturday night for their fifth straight home victory.

Avalanche not losing faith in Semyon Varlamov despite rocky start

DENVER — This season, fans of the Washington Capitals are allowed to have a second-favorite team: Whoever faces the Colorado Avalanche. The July 1 trade that Semyon Varlamov West brought a first- and a second-round pick back. So began Avalanche Watch 2012, because where the Caps pick in the first ...
