The New York Rangers are a team that has certain lynchpins that hold the whole thing together.  When you think of those players Lundqvist, Callahan, Staal are the first three that come to mind for me.  Obviously the work of Gaborik, Richards and Dubinsky are keys to success of the team along with continuing emergence of Ryan McDonagh and Michael Sauer defensively.  The guy that is as big to the team as anyone is Dan Girardi. If Ryan Callahan is the epitome of what the Rangers want to be as an identity, then Dan Girardi is right there with him.  No player in the league blocks more shots than Girardi who every game is seemingly limping at least twice from a blocked shot but continues to return to the ice on his next shift.  He has done this as a top pair defender on the Rangers for the past three seasons without the proper recognition, at least outside of the locker room.  He is the unquestioned leader of the defense corps that is surviving the loss of All-Star Marc Staal for an in...

Dan Girardi Can’t Keep Playing 30 Minutes

Dan Girardi is playing 30 minutes a game, or close to it. Simply put, that cannot continue. We say it twice last night, and a few additional times last week, where Girardi would get a minor injury, miss a shift or two, and then come back. During those two shifts when he wasn’t out, many fans would hold their collective breaths, hoping and praying that Girardi wasn’t seriously...

Rangers Looking to Dan Girardi for Leadership

The New York Rangers have been without alternate captain Marc Staal since the beginning of the season, which is a situation that I think everyone is aware of by now. In his place has stepped in Dan Girardi, who's been given Staal's "A" for the time being. So far, Girardi has accepted the responsibility that comes along with wearing a letter and has made the best...

Let's Get Girardi Apparel in Rangers Team Store

Michael Gleich at Bleeding All Blue is fed up with the Rangers not having Dan Girardi apparel in the team store at Madison Square Garden and this is what he wants Rangers fans to do about it..."From what I have been told, the reason that no Girardi merchandise is available in the stores at MSG is because it is not a requested item by the fans. Time for us to change that fact...

Torts: Girardi One of the Most Under-Rated Players in the NHL

John Tortorella talks to Blueshirts United about Dan Girardi's importance to the Rangers..."He doesn't get talked about too much in the league or around here, but I think he is one of the most underrated players in our game. Danny doesn't say much, he's a pretty quiet kid, but how he plays in all the situations he's put in is a tremendous learning tool for...

Rangers Future On Defense Is Bright

Marc Staal is the Rangers best defenseman. He has steadily improved each of his 4 NHL seasons and become the rock of the Rangers defense corps, usually playing from 25-30 minutes a night. Unfortunately, do to lingering post concussion syndrome symptoms; it is possible that Staal will not even play a game with the team [...]

Rangers Extend Winning Streak To Three

The New York Rangers used a 3-goal first period to defeat the Montreal Canadiens by a score of 5-3 at Madison Square Garden last night. Knowing that the Canadiens had played on Friday night against the Ottawa Senators, the Blueshirts came out and took advantage of a tired Canadiens’ team. The team got goals from Erik Christensen, Dan Girardi and a terrific goal from Michael Del...

Guest blogger HWirth: Rangers-Canadiens in review

Nothing beats Original Six matchups on Hockey Night in Canada as the New York Rangers (6-3-3) continued their winning ways with a 5-3 win over the Montreal Canadiens (5-6-2). The Canadiens came into the game winners of 4 straight but were missing Scott Gomez (that’s a bad thing, right?) Thoughts: 1) Fireworks early (not created by Avery) after a clean hit by Blunden off the...

Boyhood Buddies Together Again with Rangers

By Bruce Berlet It’s almost something out of Ripley’s Believe It or Not. Then again, even Ripley’s might not believe this tale. Two decades ago, Dan Girardi and Andre Deveaux lived five minutes apart in Welland, Ontario, Canada, and spent many a day shooting at targets in a net that Girardi’s father had set up at the end of the driveway. “We played games for candy...

The Ones You Gotta Win - Thrash…err….Jets @ Rangers Post Game Thoughts…

The Rangers had to have this one tonight. No ifs, ands or buts about it. They HAD to have it. Why? It’s simple, they were playing against an inferior team without most of their “name” players. No Antropov, no Enstrom….ok, well, maybe just those 2, but for a hapless team to begin with, those 2 are enough. The Jets had all sorts of injuries to their defense, and...

Video: Interviews with Ryan Callahan, Ryan McDonagh and Derek Stepan

… Rangers are finally skating well and I see them having a solid game against Ottawa tonight.

Rangers run away from Habs in first

NEW YORK (AP) - Erik Christensen scored one of New York's three first-period goals, and the Rangers overcame a 1-for-9 effort on the power play to hang on for a 5-3 victory over the Montreal Canadiens on Saturday night. Defensemen Dan Girardi ...

Rangers/Jets Recap

This is going to be a short recap, as I only really saw what was going on for the second and third period (more on that in the bullets). But the Rangers are now 7-3-3, 4-1-1 at home, and doing this without Marc Staal. Remember why we preach patience? It’s because the season is filled with highs, lows, peaks, and valleys. Just ride it out, and you’ll do so without having a heart...

Rangers Hold On For 5-3 Win Over Montreal, Extend Winning Streak To Three

The New York Rangers extended their winning streak to three games as they defeated the Montreal Canadiens 5-3 Saturday night.  New York jumped out a 3-0 lead, but Montreal pulled to within one on two different occasions before Ryan Callahan sealed the win with an empty netter.  The goal came only 1:11 after Brian Gionta scored to cut the lead to 4-3. Things got interesting...

Video: The mess that Mike Blunden made in New York

There are a lot of things wrong about the following sequence from the New York Rangers' game against the Montreal Canadiens on Saturday night: As Brandon Dubinsky skated through the neutral zone, Mike Blunden of Montreal nailed him with a big open-ice hit. This drew the ire of the Rangers, as Ryan Callahan skated over and took him on. A big scrum followed, along with two fights...
