The Detroit Red Wings already were in trouble in Game 6 before the refs decided to award Michael Frolik a penalty shot. Frolik then shoveled some dirt on the Wings’ grave, burying that penalty shot past Jimmy Howard. The Wings led 2-1 heading to the third period, only to see Chicago quickly erase that gap and then take the lead with a pair of goals. Frolik then blocked a Carlo Colaiacovo shot and took off down ice on a breakaway, with Colaiacovo chasing him. The Wings’ defenseman delivered a fairly weak slash to what appeared to be Frolik’s stick, between Frolik’s hands, causing the puck to slide to the corner. Frolik was awarded a penalty shot nonetheless. The result:

Michael Frolik scores sick goal on controversial penalty shot call

The Detroit Red Wings held a 2-1 lead entering the third period of game six against the Chicago Blackhawks and when they started the third period the wheels fell off the wagon. The Red Wings were down 3-2 when Blackhawks forward Michael Frolik found himself on a breakaway.  Red Wings defenseman Carlo Colaiacovo backchecked and took a one-handed swing at Frolik, hitting his stick...

From the NHL's PR department: BLACKHAWKS, RED WINGS MEET IN GAME 7 FOR FIRST TIME SINCE 1965 NEW YORK (May 28, 2013) -- For the first time in nearly half a century and just the third time in their 87-year rivalry, the Chicago Blackhawks and Detroit Red Wings will contest a Game 7 when the clubsdecide their Western Conference Semifinal Wednesday night in Chicago (8 p...

Babcock still sees sunshine with Game 6 on horizon

DETROIT -- As Red Wings coach Mike Babcock was about to address the sparse press corps Sunday afternoon at Joe Louis Arena, he joked about how he liked this size of room, with this many people in it, figuring hed have an easy round with the media on the heels of Saturday's 4-1 loss at Chicago. Toward the end of his longer-than-anticipated question-and-answer session, Babcock...

Joakim Andersson subtly produces for Wings

Chicago -- When you're playing on a line with Damien Brunner and Gustav Nyquist, you're not going to get a lot of attention. But that doesn't bother Joakim Andersson. "They're more skilled than I am and maybe they're more pretty to watch," Andersson said, smiling after Saturday's morning skate. Brunner had 12 goals and 14 assists in 44 games during...

Red Wings-Blackhawks Game 6 game-day updates: Wings ‘loose,’ but Babcock demands a better effort

The Detroit Red Wings face a near-must-win situation as they hope to eliminate the Chicago Blackhawks tonight (8 PM EDT, NBCSN/CBC/97.1 FM, post-game on FSD) and avoid a winner-take-all Game 7 situation on Wednesday evening. If we are to believe what the Blackhawks' players and coach claimed on Sunday afternoon, the Blackhawks may have "their backs against the wall,"...

Red Wings are witnessing Brendan Smith slowly mature thanks to Kyle Quincey’s mentoring

As noted in the game-day update thread, Red Wings defenseman Brendan Smith didn't make the brightest comments about the liberties the Blackhawks have been taking while speaking to MLive's Ansar Khan after today's morning skate, but Smith has slowly but surely settled down in terms of his on-ice demeanor, playing more consistently and making fewer mistakes while skating...

Kulfan: Justin Abdelkader’s parents narrowly avert fire from burning home down

Well this is crappy news with a significant silver lining, per the Detroit News's Ted Kulfan: Losing Game 5 Saturday was bad enough, but forward Justin Abdelkader received more bad news afterward. His parents' house in Norton Shores, Mich., the house Abdelkader grew up in, suffered damage in an electrical fire Saturday night. The damage was contained to the detached...

Henrik Zetterberg and Jonathan Toews (giff)

s/t to Jack who posted this gif in the comments of another post. So, do you think that the refs are not calling the obstruction in this series? This is pre-lockout officiating in the NHL. The calls the officials have let go have been pretty obvious. Zetterberg has been in Toews hockey pants all series long.

Chicago Blackhawks stave off elimination in game six

The Chicago Blackhawks waited until the third period to turn on the desperation, but hey, whatever works. Chicago did well to score first on the road against the Detroit Red Wings, but were outplayed going into the third period. The unlikely trio of Michal Handzus, Bryan Bickell, and Michael Frolik scored consecutively to lead the Blackhawks to a 4-3 win. Wednesday will be Game 7...

We've been waiting for this Game 7

DETROIT -- Jonathan Toews sat in a weary but victorious Chicago Blackhawks dressing room late Monday night, quiet except for the din of interviews and unspooling hockey tape. I asked if he knew how long it had been since the National Hockey League witnessed the occasion his team earned a Game 7 between the Blackhawks and their Original Six rival Detroit Red Wings. No, Toews replied...

Conference Final ‘scenarios’: Red Wings would play Kings on Friday if they advance

From the NHL (and pardon me for saying this, but the Red Wings blogger is posting this in his *#$%@& Red Wings blog): 2013 STANLEY CUP PLAYOFFS CONFERENCE FINALS SCHEDULE SCENARIOS NEW YORK (May 28, 2013) – The National Hockey League today announced the schedule scenarios, including the dates, starting times and broadcast information, for the 2013 Stanley Cup Playoffs...

Red Wings-Blackhawks Sunday practice updates: after optional skate, Babcock preaches an even keel

The day after the Detroit Red Wings dropped a 4-1 decision to the Chicago Blackhawks, the Wings doubtlessly gathered at Joe Louis Arena with more "even-keel" comments in mind as they prepare for Game 6 on Monday (8 PM, NBCSN/CBC/97.1, with a post-game show on Fox Sports Detroit), but the Detroit News's Gregg Krupa reports that the coaching staff rather wisely decided...

Red Wings-Blackhawks Game 6 set-up: Wings hope home-fan advantage will help them knife the Hawks

The Detroit Red Wings don't necessarily have to win Game 6 tonight against the Chicago Blackhawks (8 PM EDT, NBCSN/CBC/97.1 FM, post-game on Fox Sports Detroit), but between dropping Game 5 in rather dreadful fashion and the fact that the Wings taught the Anaheim Ducks a stiff lesson about the fact that a "winner-take-all Game 7" situation is dangerous (never mind the...
