Despite a spate of injuries that could leave the Detroit Red Wings down a couple of key forwards when the season opens, veteran Mike Knuble could not claim a roster spot. Instead, Knuble will head to the AHL. Knuble will sign PTO with Grand Rapids, trying to catch onto NHL team. — Ansar Khan (@AnsarKhanMLive) January 18, 2013 A “PTO”, as mentioned by MLive’s Ansar Khan there, is a professional try-out contract. Essentially, Knuble can play with the Griffins for up to 25 games and is free to sign with an NHL team as a free agent at any point during that stint. The Detroit Free Press’ Helene St. James wrote earlier Friday that Knuble would not be on the Wings’ opening-day roster — with Patrick Eaves returning from a concussion, Detroit is at 14 forwards. St. James’ roster look: The Wings plan to carry 14 forwards: Henrik Zetterberg, Pavel Datsyuk, Damien Brunner, Johan Franzen, Valtteri Filppula, Mikael Samuelsson, Daniel Cleary, Bertuzzi, Jordin Tootoo, Justin Abdelkader, Drew Miller, Cory Emmerton, Jan Mursak and Eaves (Helm won’t count on IR). Michigan alumnus Mike Knuble, who was on a tryout, won’t make the team. On defense, it’s Niklas Kronwall, Jonathan Ericsson, Brendan Smith, Kyle Quincey, Ian White, Carlo Colaiacovo and Kindl. The goaltenders are Jimmy Howard and Jonas Gustavsson. So, there you have it. Knuble’s out, Eaves is back and Helm’s return will be delayed. Let’s drop the puck.
