John Branch at the New York Times reports on the extensive research Derek Boogaard's father Len did on his son's death including these findings...

"In a six-month stretch from October 2008 to April 2009, while playing 51 games, Boogaard received at least 25 prescriptions for the painkillers hydrocodone or oxycodone, a total of 622 pills, from 10 doctors — eight team doctors of the Wild, an oral surgeon in Minneapolis and a doctor for another N.H.L. team.

In the fall of 2010, an official for the Rangers, Boogaard's new team, was notified of Boogaard's recurring abuse of narcotic pain pills. Nonetheless, a Rangers team dentist soon wrote the first of five prescriptions for hydrocodone for Boogaard after he sustained an injury.

Another Rangers doctor, although aware that Boogaard also had been addicted to sleeping pills in the past, wrote nearly 10 prescriptions for Ambien during Boogaard's lone season with the team."

Branch notes that while Len Boogaard he was able to get Derek's medical records from the Wild, the Rangers refused so he had to obtain them through the player's association.

Branch also says that Boogaard's father tipped the Rangers off when Derek renewed his drug problem and upon hearing the news Glen Sather called the enforcer into his office, demanded the truth and threatened to trade him.

...absolutely mind blowing that the Wild & Rangers doctors would give prescription drugs to an addict. And why wouldn't the Rangers release Boogaard's records to his father? Obviously trying to protect their doctors.

...just a sad situation that may have been prevented if the systems put in place didn't fail him. Where was the NHL Substance Abuse Program when all this was going on?

Mark Messier named the three finalists for the "Mark Messier Leadership Award" and Ryan Callahan made the list. Here's the announcement...

The Kings Dustin Brown and Phoenix's Shane Doan are the other finalists.

...any chance Messier plays favorites? Not that Callahan needs help winning this award.

Speaking of Messier, he gave his thoughts on the Rangers season to Andrew Gross at the Bergen Record and hinted that the Rangers may have tired in the playoffs...

“Moving forward there, you can see the teams that go on to win the Stanley Cup seem to get stronger as the playoff series go on and that is a testament to the depth they have in the organization. For us this year, a key thing will be to add to our depth so we don’t have to use as many players as much as we did and we can continue to keep our strength and barring major injuries going forward I think the more depth you have the less chance you have of wearing players down and getting injuries."

...hope Torts doesn't see that quote.

...wonder if Torts has the stones to call out Messier for this. Either privately or publicly.

***

While Tortorella may not call out Messier, he did discuss his behavior during press conferences on Costas Tonight last night...

...biggest thing for me from this interview is to hear Torts say that when Marian Gaborik first came to the Rangers he asked for days off and didn't think he needed to practice every day. While it's great to hear Gaborik isn't that type of player anymore, it just boggles my mind that some athletes have that mentality. Although in Gaborik's case it could have been him trying to stay healthy after being so injury prone with the Wild.

The Rangers list Brad Richards top five moments of the past season and here's #1...

...really no other choice for #1. Richards had one of the all-time clutch seasons in Rangers history.

The Devils are now one game away from being swept in the Stanley Cup Finals after losing to the Kings 4-0 last night to go down 3-0 in the series...
