PLAYERS: Johan Motin
TEAMS: Edmonton Oilers
Swedish Oil is breaking news daily. The latest scoop has Johan Motin heading to the SEL. There's a great quote, I would post it here but the entire post is worth quoting so it's a must-read. We talked about this in August and more recently here and the fact that Motin was falling well down the depth chart and likely to be in Stockton. Motin was drafted 103rd overall and did make the NHL for 1 game, so I hesitate to grade him as a draft fail. He did not emerge as a legit NHL option during his entry level deal, so that makes him a draft miss at the very least. Among Stu MacGregor selections, Motin joins Troy Hesketh and Jordan Bendfeld as clear miss selections. The 2008 draft--MBS' first one--still has Eberle, Hartikainen and Cornet pushing.

Is "Klefbom" Swedish For "Ryan Whitney"?

Swedish Oil is a must stop everyday, he brings information on all levels. One of his strengths is Oiler kids in Europe and he's got the goods again. Quoting his article and a Finnish reporter (Sami Hoffrén) Klefbom was playing for Sweden against the Russians:Klefbom was hit to the head by a Russian forward and he had to leave the game. Didn’t play in the tournament after...

Eager Wants More Minutes, Renney Wants More Wins

“I don’t think they realize yet what it takes to win on a nightly basis… It starts in your own head. The minute that you man up and buy in and understand how much it hurts to be a winner, we have a shot. Right now, not good enough.” That’s head coach Tom Renney on Sunday night after his team’s third loss in a row, this one against the Chicago Blackhawks. “I’m not...

His Bite Is Worse than His Barker

When Steve Tambellini signed Cam Barker this summer, we knew what the Oilers were getting based on resume. His recent injury then should be considered a stroke of good luck? In the July 2nd post I linked to above, this was the main issue:Did he ever--at any time--play tough minutes in the NHL? No. He didn't in Minnesota and in Chicago they always had a better option. Whatever...

Monty Steve's Leaving for the Circus: Hawks 6 vs Oilers 3

Going into last night all everyone could talk about was how the Oilers were showing stellar defense, that Khabibulin was back to his former self. There was even a piece a week or so back saying that the Oilers were doing so well because of their commitment to blocking shots.Fast forward to the morning, and what do we see? Khabby having flashbacks to what it was like in the UC before...

The Edmonton Oilers mimicking Penguins

The Edmonton Oilers may not make the playoffs this year, but there is plenty of evidence to support the notion that the future is bright. The Oilers have been the early surprise of the NHL season, sitting just one point behind the Minnesota Wild for first in the Northwest division. At one point, they were the top team in the league, and look to have, at least...

Hawks not surprised with Khabibulin's rebound

Nikolai Khabibulin, 38, has posted a 1.52 GAA & .945 save percentage in 2011-12 (Photo by Andy Devlin / EOHC). Chicago, IL – Nikolai Khabibu...

Contest: Ryan Nugent-Hopkins Poetry Slam, Volume 1

Full disclosure: We weren't really sure how a poetry contest would play. We know when it comes to Reader Art Contests, we're golden. But poetry's a different animal, so we were a little apprehensive about "For The Love Of Nuge: The Ryan Nugent-Hopkins Poetry Slam." Then this entry from Mohammad Rashead rolled in. It's called "Draft 2011 was the Donkey...

Crazy Horses

I will admit to a hockey fan's lifetime of playing favorites when it comes to choosing players to cheer for over the years. As a kid, I was a Bruins fan, so that meant the extra guys (Wayne Carleton, Ace Bailey, Gary Doak, Bill Speer) were guys I knew all about because lost causes, also rans and distant bells had their careers in the balance every shift. Since I can remember...

Senators-Oilers Preview

Improved scoring and goaltending have helped the Ottawa Senators bounce back from a season-worst losing streak that opened this month. The Edmonton Oilers have all kinds of problems to fix in what has become a rough November. Ottawa goes for its third straight victory Thursday night when the Oilers try to post their first five-game home winning streak since 2007-08. Since scoring...

Off With a Smile

The hockey season just throws a hanging curveball at you at times. Last night, the Hawks got one in an Oilers squad that was at the end of a six-game road trip that spanned every timezone the continent has to offer, and it was pretty clear they just wanted to go home. The Hawks raced out to a lead from the opening bell, and though the Oilers hinted at coming back, they didn't...

Blackhawks score 5 on Oilers' Khabibulin (AP)

Jonathan Toews and Steve Montador each scored twice to help the Chicago Blackhawks beat the Edmonton Oilers 6-3 on Sunday night for their third straight victory. Duncan Keith had a goal and assist for Chicago (11-4-3), which handed Edmonton its third consecutive loss. Daniel Carcillo capped the scoring with an empty-net goal.
