From The Victory Formation:

While Jordan Staal was busy saying “I do,” the Pittsburgh Penguins were busy finalizing a deal to send the center to the Carolina Hurricanes.

The agent for Staal, Paul Krepelka, informed him at the wedding reception that he would be joining his brother, Eric, with the Hurricanes.

"It was definitely tough news to hear,” Staal said, per the Associated Press. “But obviously I’m still very excited about it. With my teammates in the back corner, it got a little emotional, but they knew that a lot of good things could come out of this.”

The Pens attempted to sign Staal to a 10-year contract extension, but after he balked at that, they began looking for trade partners. The Hurricanes gave up center Brandon Sutter, defenseman Brian Dumoulin and a first-round draft pick in the deal.

Staal turned down the 10-year offer because he felt that it would end any chance of him playing with his brother. Ironically, the Penguins accelerated that opportunity.

There are still two other Staal brothers in the league. Marc is with the New York Rangers through the 2015 season, and Jared is within the Carolina organization, but not quite ready for a call-up. Jordan is expecting to sign a long-term extension with the Hurricanes, so there is a chance that all four brothers could be teammates at some point in the next four years.

Maybe getting traded on your wedding day is kinda like rain on it. It seems like bad news at first, but it is actually good luck.

Matt Karash: Wow - Thunder Bay south

Quick thoughts on the big deal... I like aggressive. I like trying to win now. The team needs to. And I like Jordan Staal as a solid 2-way proven NHL center with size. The dreamer in me hoped that the Canes could put together a big enough package of futures that we could slot Brandon Sutter at the 2nd or 3rd center slot. But to get a player like Jordan Staal, you can...

Jordan Staal vs Brandon Sutter

Jordan Staal uses free agency to his advantage

It's not quite like LeBron James, Dwyane Wade and Chris Bosh all getting together for a so-called "summit" to decide that they, all unrestricted free agents in the same year, wanted to play together in Miami. But the concept is somewhat similar when Jordan Staal rejected a 10-year contract offer from the Pittsburgh Penguins last week because, in part, it meant the...
