A man who was acting as Santa Claus at a festival in Toronto was fired for telling a young boy that his favorite team, well, is pretty bad.

The Santa apparently showed up 30 minutes late for his gig at Lowe’s Toronto Christmas Market and then proceeded to insult a 3-year-old boy.

“The first thing he tells my son is, ‘Oh, you look like Paul Bunyan,’” the child’s mother told the Toronto Sun. “Really? Is that appropriate?

“Then he said, ‘Oh, you’re wearing a Toronto Maple Leafs tuque, you shouldn’t be wearing that, they suck.’”

The mother took the insults as a clear sign to leave. She says her son was crying all the way home and asked who Paul Bunyan was. The mother says all she could tell her son was that Santa was having a bad day.

Upset over the issue, the mother went on the festival’s Facebook page to complain.

Just came back from the market and I am fuming! The market itself was so so, great freebies and great carol singers. But, I have a 3 year old and the reason we went there was for him to see Santa. SANTA WAS A JERK! My son waited in line during a cold and snowy afternoon and the first thing Santa told him was that his thick GAP black and red jacket made him look like Paul Bunyan. Then he also pointed out my son’s Toronto Maple leafs winter toque and said he shouldnt be wearing that and that the Maple leafs suck! What an awful experience for my boy, because Santa said his favorite team sucked! then my son wanted to know who Paul Bunyan was. It was the worst Santa experience! My initial post was deleted so I am reposting this.

The woman says she received an apology from the event’s organizers. The Toronto Sun also confirmed that the Santa has been fired.

And here we were thinking this sort of thing only happened in movies. This is the exact sort of thing that could scar a poor child for life.

  • Good for her. Good for the organizers to apologize. Great for the fireing of Santa.
  • I agree, good for her saying something! I applaud for the firing of Santa!
  • " Good for her" ? Good for what ? How will she react when something really BAD happens. ?Complain on another Facebook page . We are turning into a bunch of over sensative cry babies.

    Update: December 07, 2012
" only happens in the movies " ! OMG ! I hope not. What would it be called " SANTA says U suck ". A movie with a running time of about 5 minutes, then everyone , including that 3 yr old will have compleatly forgotten . Who is the guy who wrote this dribble.? WOW !
  • Am I missing something? Is Paul Bunyan a derogatory slur, now?
  • Yeah, I didnt get why she was torqued about that either. Maybe her kiddos chubby and she thought Santa was picking on him?? No idea.
  • That's what I was wondering!

I made an account just so I could let the world know we both wonder the same thing!
  • I mean to tell you, Tell the kid Paul Bunyan was a worker, and lumberjack. Not the best way to handle a kid though. I guess the guy missed that day in training as to " How to Handle Kids"
  • not the most intelligent thing Santa has ever done, but hey, the Maple Leafs DO suck.
  • wow- this mom over re-acted ... is that a money hungry lawsuit i smell-come on you fat bitch......
  • I am sure she will try... Good thing for the kid is that he will not remember this next year... Unless mommy dearest keeps talking about it.
  • Ummm, they have laws that prevent frivolous lawsuits such as these in Canada.
  • She never seems to explain why the Paul Bunyan reference was so insulting to her. Probably cuz it isn't. Sounds like she's the kind of person who just likes to complain. and the Leafs DO suck.
  • When i was a kid Paul Bunyon was a fok hero.
  • OMG ! SCARED FOR LIFE ! You mean this kid will never be right AGAIN! Until the day he dies ?! You have GOT to be kidding! Do you think that little of that kid to think that his ENTIRE LIFE is now over because a mall santa said his hockey team sucked ?AND : Paul Bunyan is a lumberjack figure in North American folklore and tradition. One of the most famous and popular North American folklore heroes!! His mother could not tell her son was a HERO instead ? Come on people.
  • You all seem to over look that this is a 3 year old. If Santa was gonna tell the boy he looked like paul bunyan than maybe he should have told him who he was and why he said it. And to tell a 3 year old his team sucks. If its his favorite team then its important to him. Don't under estimate the power of a bad experience. Santa was an ASS and deserves what he got.
  • Can YOU remember what you were doing when you were 3 now? 3 year olds are a lot more durable then you give them credit for. UNLESS his stupid mother keeps reminding him of this, the child will have forgotten of in a few weeks.Ya act like this guy gunned down his parents right in front of him. geeze. And yes, I have 2 boys now over 25yrs old, so I know what I'm talking about.
  • I have to agree with YourKidding. Considering the boy was 3 years old, why couldn't they just put a Santa hat on a pig and call it Santa Claus? It would probably save the mall a lot of money, and it sounds like that's really all they did, anyway. Since it's apparently not right for a mall to fire any Santa until he has traumatized a child for life, a Santa hat on a pig saves a lot of people having to even worry about that.
  • yeah, I can see if Santa told the kid he looked like Saddam Hussein...but what was wrong with Paul Bunyan? anyway, Santa could have been more diplomatic and said something like, "well kid, if you play for the Leafs, I'm sure they're gonna be undefeated."
  • YourKidding:

You "KNOW" what you are talking about? What you "KNOW" is what's in YOUR family and trying in vain to cast a broad shadow over EVERYONE else. It's a scientific FACT that, albeit far and few between, some people can remember when they were still in their Mothers womb."I" certainly remember 71 years ago at only TWO years of age.Pearl.And just one year later,a Man KILLED by ejection from his vehicle.I did not KNOW what I was seeing but DID 2 years later.Speak for "YOURSELF" as you don't "KNOW" diddly about what OTHERS can remember. This incident CAN scar that toddler for the rest of his life.It just don't mean he will be dysfunctional. This is a 3 year old "NOT" a full grown naive, ignorant Adult."YOU" want the WORLD ro revolve around YOUR 2 Boys.It CANT happen and WONT happen.I have 2 Boys over 36 to 43 and 3 girls over 38 to 45 and I "DON'T" guage the WORLD by them.Get the drift?Lastly--You "KNOW" what you are talking about with regard to YOU and YOURS only. You have NOT the levity to SPEAK for everyone else.
  • Your comparing mass murder with a 3 second " your team sucks". I guess your right, now I'm scared for life from your over reacting rant.
  • At least santa??? told the TRUTH! Unlike many people who say lets go see santa?? The fake santa told the truth big deal. They should tell the child santa is fake and he got fired for telling the TRUTH! Poor kid for believing santa that is fake in the first place.
  • Why are we so hard on the Santa? What is Santas main thing to say? Dont tell lies and be nice. Well he may not have been nice to the 3 year old but he didnt lie. The Leafs do suck and have for many years.
  • nicely said.
  • Well truthfully? A 3 year old having a favorite team in any sport? I believe they are only copying their parents views. The 3 year old wasn't offended I'm sure. Now he was probably upset because he could sense his mother's mood. This woman was miffed because of the wait, and perhaps she does not even know who Paul Bunyan is... so she was set up for a frustrating experience. People need to relax, everyone stresses out so terribly during the holidays.. Yeah, the Santa may have not been the perfect "storybook" Santa that we portray as an over blown myth to children until they get too smart to believe it anymore, but I do not believe this warrants any kind of compensation for a "scarred for life" lawsuit or such. Merry Christmas everyone.
  • First of all Santa is not real; parents should stop this falsehood; children would not be "scared" for life if parents would not let this lie live on; just tell your child the "TRUTH"; parents teach their children to tell the truth yet once a year parents lie to their children about some man in a red suit that is going to make their Christmas the best ever; please stop the lies!!
  • boo to those who want to say she over-reacted.......mommy's are over protective.....duh....that's what they do......3 years old.....that boob deserved to be fired for being so insensitive.....Oh, Gee, golly but SANTA is supposed to make kids happy - NOT TO MAKE THEM CRY......
  • This should be the perfect time to tell the kid that theres no such thing as santa, just some asshole dressed like a fat candy cane. Then tell the boy the true meaning of CHRISTmas, JESUS knows if youre good or bad and you pray to HIM for requests not a drunk bum dressed like a freak!
  • Some of you MEN are so completely stupid! You have no self-control or common sense in anything anymore, especially when it comes to the well-being of children.

This is a 3-year-old CHILD. He was there to have a happy day and see Santa Claus. He was there to listen to what the child wanted for Christmas. This IDIOT Santa was out of line. He wasn't hired for what he did You jerks trying to take up for this loser are unbelievable! I can't believe some of the posts here. I've lost faith in you guys.

You must protect your children nowadays. And personally, I wouldn't take my kid to Santa -- too many weirdos out there trying to get next to our kids to hurt/destroy their innocent lives.

SANTA YOU WERE A JERK! I'll bet this Santa is a bum in the first place and the employers had a feeling he wasn't right, and this incident just proved it to them, so he got axed!

    Great going!
  • Wasn't there a song.....never mind.
  • Wow! Some civic pride in a youngster. What a horrible thing... Doesn't matter if it's due to parents influence or not. Geez, when did it become wrong to support the home team? A Toronto Maple Leafs fan in Toronto - who would have thought? Santa was grossly in error to say anything derogatory to the tot. He's Santa. And "sucks?" When the hell did that become acceptable language to use around a pre-schooler? If there's some need to remark, then it should have been a jovial "hope they have a better year!"
And, as for the mom? I feel sorry for the 3 year old growing up in a household already ingraining class warfare and 'station.' That she would be aghast that her young white collar prodigy could be confused with a hard working blue collar legend is concerning. She specifically mentioned the 'GAP' jacket, like it was an entitlement to special treatment.
  • There is no santa it's a lie. Tell the TRUTH and the TRUTH will set you free of all these horrible things that happen. If we just tell are kids the truth then this wouldn't have happened! Hello!
  • Who is the dope who wrote the "scared for life" line at the end of the article. Larry Brown ? He's as much to blame for all this BS.
