DALLAS (AP) -- The Dallas Stars have a new general manager. Jim Nill isn't ready to say if he'll have a new coach. Nill was introduced Monday after spending the past 15 years as an assistant GM with the Detroit Red Wings, who just extended the longest playoff streak in North American pro sports to 22 seasons. Glen Gulutzan has coached the last two of five straight years without a trip to the postseason in Dallas. The Stars hold the option on the only remaining year in his contract. Nill, who signed a five-year deal, says he wants to meet with everyone in the organization, Gulutzan included, before addressing a possible coaching change. Nill replaces Joe Nieuwendyk, who was fired Sunday.

Dallas Stars Name Jim Nill As New General Manager

DALLAS – Dallas Stars Owner and Governor Tom Gaglardi announced today that he has named Jim Nill the team’s new General Manager at a press conference at American Airlines Center. He will begin his new role immediately, becoming the 11th General Manager in franchise history and sixth since the team moved to Dallas. “Jim Nill, along with Ken Holland, has been at the core of...

Dallas Stars Hire GM Jim Nill

One significant story I haven't written about yet that occurred at the end of the regular season is the change in general managers in Dallas.  Joe Nieuwendyk was fired.  He was hired in 2009 and never managed to qualify for the playoffs.  He was a prime example of a star player who was rushed into a position above his qualifications and struggled there.  In fact when he was...

Red Wings will lose Jim Nill to Dallas

We knew that Red Wings assistant GM Jim Nill would leave the organization to become another team's general manager eventually, and TSN's Darren Dreger reports that Nill will leave Detroit this spring to become the Dallas Stars' GM: All indications are the Dallas Stars are about to make a GM change. Detroit's Jim Nill expected to be named GM of Stars as early...

Hotstove confirms that Jim Nill’s going to head to Dallas

Somewhat ironically: the CBC's Hotstove Tonight crew on Hockey Night in Canada confirmed that the Red Wings will lose Jim Nill to Dallas "after the season" (whether that means before or after the NHL Draft that Nill tends to run for the Wings, nobody seems to know yet), but in revealing as much, the CBC's Elliotte Friedman stated that the Wings and Stars were trying...

Bag of Pucks: Nill in, Nieuwendyk out for Stars

It was a bizarre night on Saturday evening when the Stars were playing out the string against Detroit in an arena full of red and equally of defeat for anyone who loves hockey in Dallas. For what seems like the umpteenth time in a row, the Stars fight and claw and come up short. Actually, it was only the 5th season in a row, but after they spoiled us by showing success virtually...

It wasn’t all good news for the Red Wings Saturday night in Dallas… According to various reports, Red Wings assistant GM Jim Nill is expected to take over for Joe Nieuwendyk as the Dallas Stars’ new general manager next season. An announcement making the move official should come Monday. All indications are the Dallas Stars are about to make a GM change. Detroit’s Jim Nill...

Ryan Martin to Replace Jim Nill('s Mustache)

Wow, have we let all of you down.  Probably the biggest weekend of of regular season hockey for the Wings in 22 or so years and what do we bring you?  A couple recaps, and that's it.  Well in that time, Jim Nill, Wings assistant GM who's consistently been a topic of rumors of his leaving to become the GM of somewhere, has been hired by Dallas to be their GM.  We all...

Hits and Misses of the Joe Nieuwendyk Era

With the era of Joe Nieuwendyk as general manager of the Dallas Stars officially coming to an end on Sunday with the announcement that he had been relieved of his duties, it's time to reflect on what exactly the now-former GM accomplished or didn't accomplish during his time at the helm of the Stars front office. So, here's a rundown: HITS Trading Michael Ryder (2013...

Dallas Stars Relieve Joe Nieuwendyk Of His Duties

FRISCO, Texas - Dallas Stars Owner and Governor Tom Gaglardi announced today that he has relieved Joe Nieuwendyk of his duties as General Manager of the hockey club. "Joe Nieuwendyk has represented the Dallas Stars extremely well as the club's General Manager and has helped put pieces in place that will once again turn this team into a contender," said Gaglardi....

Stars fire general manager Joe Nieuwendyk

Before the puck even dropped on Saturdays regular-season finale with the Detroit Red Wings, the Dallas Stars were already in the news because of a report by TSN's Darren Dreger that said club general manager Joe Nieuwendyk would be fired and replaced by Jim Nill, current assistant GM of those same Red Wings. The club refused to comment and nothing was official until Sunday morning...

Dallas Stars desperately needed new leadership

Joe Nieuwendyk never got the Dallas Stars back into the playoffs. This is why he is no longer general manager of the once-mighty franchise.“I’m very proud of what we accomplished,” he told the Dallas Morning News. “I know you get measured on getting to the playoffs and challenging for Stanley Cups, but I feel we’ve made a lot of progress in four years. I feel good about...

The Best Type Of GM

from Ken Campbell of The Hockey News, Teams are much more likely to have sustained success by hiring guys such as Jim Nill, who was named the new Stars GM Monday. As a player, Nill appeared in 524 NHL games, each one of them because he worked more diligently than any other player on his team. Over the course of his career, he averaged about a goal every 10 games, but kept moving...
