Along with inking Jeff Halpren to a contract last night, the New York Rangers have also signed defenseman Logan Pyett to a one-year, $600k deal. Pyett, 24, spent the last four season with the Grand Rapids Griffns of the AHL (Detroit's minor leage affiliate).

Of note, Pyett was the last selection (212th overall) of the 2006 NHL draft.

Here is what Griffins Central has to say about Pyett:

Plus: Okay skater with decent lateral movement and balance... Good, heavy shot... Offensively skilled but no flair... Makes the safe play... Good intensity and determination...
Minus:
Undersized for position... He possesses no elite level skills... Defensively inconsistent... Needs to improve skating...

Projection:
NHL Depth Defenseman
Hockey's Future has a mini report on Pyett as well:

Drafted as a crafty, puck-moving defenseman. He’s small and a bit weak in his own end, but thanks to his hockey sense and vision he seems to position himself very well both offensively and defensively in order to stay out of trouble.

Pyett has some tools to make it to the pro ranks (hockey sense, passing, mobility), but he’ll need to add strength and improve his play in his own end. His physical play and positioning need development.

James Wrabel:
  • Another depth signing for New York. Pyett is destined for Connecticut, which isn't a bad thing because he'll be working with new assistant coach Jeff Beukeboom.

In other news, Larry Brooks of the New York Post reports the Rangers will be making their pitch to free-agent forward Shane Done if he decided to leave Phoenix.

James Wrabel:
  • I'm on the record as saying Doan would be a nice addition, but only at the right price. Coming off a deal making $4.55 per season, I'm not sure adding a similar cap hit for a 35 year old long-term would be wise. Truthfully, I don't see him coming East.
