Carolina Hurricanes defenseman Justin Faulk will spend this weekend in Ottawa for the NHL All-Star festivities. Just eight months ago, Faulk won the NCAA National Championship with Minnesota-Duluth. This past off-season Faulk was selected to play in the U.S. National Junior Evaluation Camp in Lake Placid, New York to see if he could make the U-20 roster for the national tournament later in the year. To cap off his success, Faulk was called up to the Hurricanes mid-season and he has never looked back. The blueliner has four goals and seven assists on the season and averages right around 22 minutes of ice time. No other Carolina skater was selected to play in Ottawa and at the mid-season, Carolina sits dead last in the Eastern Conference with 45 total points. Even with the atrocious start to the season, the Hurricanes are only 10 points away from a playoff spot so there is enough time to turn things around in the second half of the season. Faulk was one of 12 rookies selected to be a ...

Pitkanen's Recovery Won't Alter Carolina Trade Plans

Carolina Hurricanes defenseman Joni Pitkanen is recovering from knee surgery, but not as quickly as the team hoped. He may not return to action until early March – well after the NHL’s Feb. 27 trade deadline passes. But that won’t stop Carolina from entertaining trade offers for veteran defensemen Tim Gleason, Bryan Allen and Jaroslav Spacek. Each of those players will become...

Clarifying Rutherford – Hurricanes in the Rumors

Recently Jim Rutherford spoke with The News and Observers Chip Alexander. Some of Rutherfords comments seem to have been taken the wrong way by some who feel he isn’t doing enough. It has been said that the Hurricanes are actually within reach of the playoffs but due to the number of games in hand that our opponents have the Hurricanes playoff chances are slim. Rutherfords...

Hurricanes' play no longer Staal-ed

Whether it's the new coach or the new year, something has gotten into Eric Staal. Since Dec. 29 -- incidentally, two days after his brother Marc Staal was cleared for contact after suffering a concussion at the hands of Eric -- he has been on a scoring rampage with 16 points in 13 games. Some fans were booing his every shift but after the dismal start it seems that Staal is...

Top 5 Goals: Tlusty shoots off Caps

Carolina forward Jiri Tlusty couldn't be stopped, not even by a questionable Tomas Vokoun tactic in the Washington net.

Hurricanes vs.Capitals 1/15/12 Complete Coverage

I was not able to live-track the Hurricanes-Capitals game on January 15th because I was at the game and it's taken me longer than usual to get the scoring chances posted for this game because I was planning on doing something special with this. Remember my post where I tracked zone exits for certain shifts to see how effective certain defensemen were at completing breakout passes...

25 Games

The Hurricanes 2-1 overtime loss to the New York Islanders last Saturday marked game number 25 for Kirk Muller as the Hurricanes new coach. Why is that important? Because Paul Maurice was fired after game 25 (4-3 loss to Ottawa in late Nov.) and we can now reasonably compare what the two have done as the Canes bench boss. The consensus among fans is that the team is playing better...
