Eyeing up the list of the 2013 Hall of Fame Inductees, three names pop out right away, while the average hockey fan may not recognize the other two. Chris Chelios, Scott Niedermayer, and Brendan Shanahan all are joining the prestigious club based in Toronto for their efforts as players while Fred Shero and Geraldine Heaney also were voted in. The Hall gained two of the greatest defensemen to play the game in Chelios and Niedermayer, who combined for seven Stanley Cups. Chelios played until he was 48 and won the Cup once with Montreal in 1986 and twice more in Hockey Town for the Red Wings in 2002 and 2008. The American represented America in the Olympics in three different decades, including a silver medal at the 2002 Salt Lake games. Niedermayer, after being drafted by the Devils in 1991, was a cornerstone of a franchise that won three Stanley Cups during his time patrolling their blueline. After moving to Anaheim to play with his brother, Rob, he added on another one in 2007. The Canadian accumulated 740 points in 1,263 games and was an impressive +167 over his 18-year career. Both Chelios and Niedermayer fittingly were selected in their first-ballot year. NHL disciplinary Brendan Shanahan made it into Toronto in his second year on the ballot, but only due to a loaded class in 2012. Shanahan jumped around over the course of his career, starting with the Devils, followed by the Blues, Whalers, Red Wings, and finished with the Rangers. Although he entered the league as an enforcer, the second overall pick in the 1987 draft quickly developed into a scorer, tallying up 656 goals in his career, good for 13th all time. After coaching the Flyers to back-to-back Stanley Cup titles in 1974 and ‘75 and winning the first ever Jack Adams award in 1974, Fred Shero was inducted into the Hall of Fame. Although his coaching success was impeccable with the 11th best winning percentage all-time, Shero was also recognized for being the first coach to hire a full-time assistant, something that mandatory for success nowadays. Rounding out the class is Canadian Geraldine Heaney. Becoming the third woman to enter the Hall as a player, the defenseman found tremendous success in international play, winning the World Championships seven times in just 12 attempts. Some of the players that missed out on this year’s ballot include Jeremy Roenick, Rob Blake (both obvious choices for 2014), Eric Lindros, and Curtis Joseph. -Miller
