It doesn’t come as much of a surprise, but the NHL just announced that they will be scrapping all regular season games from October 11th to October 24th.  The League resumed talks with the NHLPA last Friday as well as this past Monday, but were said to have gone nowhere.  With the cancellation, a total of 82 games, including four that would have been played next Thursday on not-opening night, have been thrown out the door, with no word on whether they will be made up or not.  If those games never end up being played, it will cost the NHL upwards of $120 Million dollars in lost salary. Despite the fact that the two sides are talking, it doesn’t mean a whole lot as almost no progress has been made on just how to split up a total of $3 Billion dollars in hockey revenue.  With the lack of progress, many players have signed up to play in leagues over in Russia and Germany.  Philly’s own Claude Giroux and Danny Briere just added their names to that list, signing with Berlin side, Eisbaren...

Briere and Giroux sign with Eisbaren Berlin of the DEL

It has been reported that Danny Briere and Claude Giroux have signed with Eisbaren Berlin out of the Deutsche Eishockey Liga (DEL) in Germany. It has not been confirmed yet on when they will arrive to play in Berlin. This news comes as a bit of a surprise, as I thought Giroux might end up going to the KHL, or go and play for HC Kladno in the Czech league. HC Kladno is the team that...

Bill Meltzer: Meltzer's Musings: Phantoms, Giroux, Read, Grossmann and more

I lost a lengthy (and 80 percent completed) blog this morning to a computer freeze-up, so I will have to rewrite it from scratch. This will serve as a placeholder in the interim. The blog should be finished around 11 AM and will cover: * The Phantoms' 5-3 exhibition opener loss to Albany yesterday * An update on Claude Giroux * An update on Nicklas Grossmann * Matt Read...

Bill Meltzer: Meltzer's Musings: Giroux, Phantoms, Prospects, Acton/Peeters and More

Here's the latest on the status of Claude Giroux during the lockout. * Sport Express in Russia has reported that Avangard Omsk is out of the running for Giroux at this point after talks stalled. The team has instead signed Winnipeg Jets captain Andrew Ladd. * Czech publication iSport reported that, with Avangard seemingly out of the picture now, a reunion of Giroux and...

The Real Lockout Begins, NHL Cut First Two Weeks

When we mentioned earlier today that Danny Briere and Claude Giroux would be heading overseas, we knew the NHL would announce the cancellation of regular season games.  The National Hockey League has officially announced the cancellation of all games between October 11th through October 24th.  The cancellation includes four Flyers games, the home opener against the Boston Bruins...

Tim Panaccio: Off to Germany

A lot of us, myself included, assumed Danny Briere would go back to the Swiss League during the lockout. Turns out, he and Claude Giroux are headed the Germany to play for Eisbären Berlin in the Deutsche Eishiockey Liga (DEL). Briere texted CSNPhilly.com this morning with the news. “No other comment,” Briere said. Briere and Giroux h ad been holding out...
