Mathieu Schneider, the left-shooting defenseman hailing from New York, was drafted by the Montreal Canadiens in the third round of the 1987 NHL draft. Schneider would see some playing time during the 1987-88 NHL season, but would be sent back down, before reappearing with the Canadiens during the
1989-90 season, and solidifying himself as an NHL star.Schneider would play with Montreal into the 1994-95 season, wearing jersey number 72 for part of his time with the Habs, when he was traded to the Islanders in a blockbuster along with Kirk Muller and Craig Darby, for Pierre Turgeon and Vladimir Malakhov. Schneider would wear jersey number 72 New York briefly, before being traded to Toronto in 1996.
While playing with the Maple Leafs for two full seasons in 1997-98 and 1998-99, Schneider garnered 37 and 34 points respectively.
In 21 NHL seasons, through the 2009-10 season, Schneider has accumulated 743 points, of which 520 were assists.
