A scary moment occurred during the Dallas Stars-Colorado Avalanche game on Monday night, when veteran NHL referee Chris Rooney was down and out on the ice after an odd carom off a slapshot resulted in the puck drilling him in the head. A few minutes into the first period, a shot from the point by hulking Stars defenseman Jamie Oleksiak deflected off Avalanche player Paul Stastny’s skate and ricocheted left, appearing to catch Rooney up high in the neck area. Rooney immediately went down, play was stopped and Rooney was then attended to by medical personnel. Yowsers. While Rooney — not surprisingly — did not return to officiate the game, an AP report indicates that while a frightening scene, Rooney appears to be okay: The puck appeared to carom off the neck of Rooney, who stayed down behind the Avalanche net. Rooney eventually got up and skated off the ice. Sam Singleton, an NHL security representative, said Rooney ”checked out OK,” but he didn’t have any details. Had any details been available, I imagine the information gleaned from said details would center around how Rooney has a ghastly bruise on his neck which is now so swollen it resembles an overstuffed bratwurst that has left him with a speaking voice like Harvey Fierstein. But other than that, he’s in tip-top shape. [H/T Puck Daddy] TweetThe post NHL referee Chris Rooney drops to ice after puck drills him in the head (video) appeared first on Sportress of Blogitude.
