Three Stars of the Week 1. Patrick Marleau (San Jose Sharks) This week Marleau put together one of the more memorable weeks for a skater in a long time.  In just five games played Marleau has scored nine goals and assisted on four.  He started off the season by scoring two goals in four straight games, the first player to do so in the history of the NHL.  Marleau isn’t only producing for himself, however.  The Sharks are off to a 5-0-0 start, and as of Monday afternoon have the second most points in the Western Conference.  Aside from the points, Marleau is putting together an impressive start as well.  He has a plus/minus rating of +6, tied for fifth in the league.  Something interesting to note is that five of Marleau’s nine goals have come via the power play.  He clearly leads the league in that statistic, and San Jose easily leads the league in PP%, converting on an outrageous 37.5 percent of their chances.  The 33-year-old forward is certainly answering his critics so far this...

The checklist: things to track while your team is just winning

The Sharks appear to be working from a checklist.  Obviously scoring in the first period is on that list.  They have done that ever since that disappointing game in Calgary.    Also, power play goals are important, their power play lacked some shock and awe last season.   Needed to fix that. Patrick Marleau had his two-goals-a-game objective.  Perhaps that was drawing...

MVP So Far This Season

I have been interested in trying to establish when the NHL award winners take over the lead in their award during the course of the season for many years.  As a result, I have made picks for the NHL awards as soon as I can in the season and re-assessed those picks when necessary - in some cases many times in a season and in other cases that player held the lead for the award the...
