Katie Strang at ESPN.com reports that the NHLPA is reviewing the developing situation between Wade Redden and Rangers in which the Blueshirts will sit the veteran defenseman for the remainder of the season to ensure he is not injured and jeopardize their ability to buy him out this summer. The Rangers have also been in contact with the league. The Canadiens have deployed the same strategy with Scott Gomez. Pierre LeBrun at ESPN.com hopes that common sense prevails and the NHL and NHLPA come to some sort of side agreement that deals specifically with Gomez and Redden which allows each player to continue their NHL careers but still allow the Habs and Rangers to get out of their cap issue with both players next season. ...only way to rectify this situation is to allow both players to be bought out this season. I really don't feel bad for either player. They're still both being paid a tremendous amount of money and only have each other to blame for their poor play. I...

Rangers place Redden on waivers

As expected, the Rangers have placed Wade Redden on waivers, per Pierre LeBrun. This is step one in using their first amnesty buyout on the defenseman. Redden is expected to clear tomorrow, and will promptly be bought out by the Rangers. Tweet

Red Wings mid-day news: pondering adding Redden, Helm/Samuelsson status updates, Mrazek the All-Star

Paul already posted this in KK hockey, but it's worth repeating for TMR readers: the New York Rangers have placed Wade Redden on waivers with the intention of buying his contract out, and as the Detroit Red Wings must avail themselves of all their options to attempt to bolster their defense, the Free Press's Helene St. James reports that the Wings are at least considering...

Jan Levine: Redden, Gaborik and Kreider

Wade Redden and the Buyout: It must be some kind of cosmic arrangement that two players signed to insanely ridiculous contracts by GM Glen Sather are forcing the NHL and NHLPA to sit and revisit a concept that should have been part of the just ratified CBA. Scott Gomez and Wade Redden are each being forced - and I use that term very loosely - to sit on the sidelines and collect...

Wings May Have Interest In Wade Redden

from Helene St. James, The Detroit Red Wings want to improve their defense and are looking at Wade Redden as a possible solution. The decision is being discussed internally, especially with assistant coach Tom Renney, who coached Redden in 2008-09 with the New York Rangers. The Rangers made a big splash signing Redden to a six-year, $39-million deal in 2008, but things...

Should Nashville sign Wade Redden in order to keep him from Detroit?

According to Helene St. James of the Detroit Free Press, the Red Wings are going to kick the tires on soon-to-be-free agent Wade Redden. The New York Rangers have put the defenseman on waivers with the intention of buying him out before the season starts this weekend. With the legendary Nicklas Lidstrom retiring after 20 seasons and with Brad Stuart moving onto the San Jose Sharks...

Scott Gomez, Wade Redden are first amnesty buyout casualties

If you were to ask people who they felt would be the first two amnesty buyouts under the NHL's new CBA, they probably would have said Wade Redden and Scott Gomez. Apparently lots of folks have ESP, or at the very least have been alive and conscious the past couple of years, because who will be the first two guys bought out? Why, Redden and Gomez, of course! Redden came...

If Detroit Red Wings Choose to Upgrade Their Defense, Wade Redden Could be the Perfect Fit

The Detroit Red Wings, fresh off an offseason which saw the team lose two steady defenders in Nicklas Lidstrom and Brad Stuart, might have identified the blue line as their biggest area of need for an upgrade quickly this season. In recent months, flashy back end names such as Keith Yandle, Jay Bouwmeester and Zach Bogosian have come up in rumors. Each one of those defenders, however...

NHLPA might take issue with Scott Gomez & Wade Redden buyout situations

As mentioned yesterday, both Wade Redden and Scott Gomez are widely expected to be bought out at the end of this season. Both players are being told to go home, sit, and get paid for it -- the NHL's teams can't buyout injured players. While this is a smart strategy for the New York Rangers and Montreal Canadiens, the NHLPA is taking issue with two of their players being told...

Gomez Receives the Redden Treatment

Marc Bergevin:"Scott Gomez will not take part in the 2012-13 season and his contract will be bought out this summer." — Canadiens Montréal (@CanadiensMTL) January 13, 2013 ...i know Sather has reformed himself, but right now the Rangers will be paying Chris Drury ($1.67 million left on his buyout) and Wade Redden ($5 million actual salary) to not play for them...

Richard Cloutier: Wade Redden Fetish?

Hi...Short blog for today. Sorry. I have a valid excuse. I got carried away with fantasy hockey leagues tonight. It got so bad that my wife, in protest, started playing Whitney Houston songs really, really loud to punish me for the six-hours straight of drafting. Celine Dion; Whitney Houston; Mariah Carey - I hate that type of "music". A bunch of screaming for no reason...

Sens Looking At D Options; Redden’s Corpse Not Included

It doesn’t take a genius to assess Ottawa’s blue line and realize that it lacks proven NHL talent. Gene can yammer on all he wants about loving the team's depth, but having a slew of warm bodies means nothing unless this depth can be effective players at the game's highest level.  Beyond the four veterans, we enter a world where Mark Borowiecki, Patrick Wiercioch...

Eric Engels: Will the Canadiens buy out Gomez now?

According to various reports, after much discussion between Scott Gomez, Wade Redden, the NHLPA and the NHL, the NHL has permitted teams to exercise their right to use one of the two compliance buyouts they have between now and 2014. If the Canadiens choose to buy out Gomez before Saturday, 100% of his salary remains on the cap for this shortened season, and the rest of it vanishes...
