Home Cookin! The season is here. The Nucks host the Ducks tonight. Here’s the Matchup + Stats Insight + NWSB Gameday Preview & Prediction. The Vancouver Canucks have announced that they have signed pending UFA defenseman Alex Edler to a six-year contract extension. The team, who announced the signing well before TSN or anyone for that matter, didn’t release terms of the deal. Edler was in the last year of a deal that saw him making $3.75 million per season. His new deal is $30 million over six years, with an annual cap hit of $5million. Much less than what he could have gotten on the open market. Mike Gillis himself announced that the two sides agreed on a multi-year deal, something that doesn’t happen quite often, but I can only assume that Mike Gillis’ fury on the radio yesterday, which was directed at the Toronto media may have played a part in this deal not leaking. https://twitter.com/GMMikeGillis/status/292467923338031104 Personally, I like this deal very much. Edler, when he’s been on his game is one of the best defenseman on the ice. If he can stay consistent and his back holds out, then this deal is win-win for both sides. “Hometown” Discount While Vancouver may not be Edler’s hometown of Ostersund, Sweden, it has been his home for his entire NHL career. 6 more years of big Edler hits. I think it’s safe to say that Edler could have gotten a lot more on the open market, in both dollars and term. Here’s how Edler’s contract extension will break down.  (Courtesy of Capgeek.com, + Salary, *Cap Hit)  2013-2014 – $3,250,000+ – $5,000,000 *  2014-2015 – $4,250,000+ – $5,000,000 *  2015-2016 – $6,000,000+ – $5,000,000*  2016-2017 – $6,000,000+ – $5,000,000 *  2017-2018 – $6,000,000+ – $5,000,000*  2018-2019 – $4,500,000+ – $5,000,000* As I mentioned earlier, I like this signing a lot. I think it showed a lot of class by Edler to take the amount he took to stay in Vancouver, more importantly it showed that he, above all else wants to play here. While this signing does press the Canucks a lot closer to next seasons $64.3 million dollar salary cap, it also solidifies the top four on the back-end for the foreseeable future. I would assume that Keith Ballard would be a casualty of this signing, then again; maybe the writing has been on the doghouse wall for sometime now. The sky’s the limit As I mentioned before – if Edler can stay healthy and consistent he has the potential, in my opinion, to be a Norris trophy candidate. Pump your brakes and cool your jets, I know there are people who aren’t as thrilled about this signing as me, but you need to realize I’m not putting the Norris in his hands. I’m not even saying he’ll win it, I just think that he has the potential to at least be recognized as one of the leagues best if his play is consistent and if his back holds out. In the mean time, lets hope for more of this And more of this Enjoy the game tonight, everyone! CLICK HERE NOW TO CHECK OUT THE VANCOUVER CANUCKS CLUBHOUSE AT NWSPORTSBEAT!
