The Washington Capitals have placed their top center, Nicklas Backstrom, on Injured Reserve this morning to make room for defenseman Tomas Kundratek, who will be making his NHL debut this evening. He will get his first shot at NHL glory against the Capitals biggest rival, the Pittsburgh Penguins. Backstrom missed the past two games for the Capitals with concussion like symptoms and has not practiced since Friday in San Jose. He watched practice this morning from the bench in a hoodie and ball cap. The injury occurred last Tuesday when Calgary Flames’ Rene Bourque caught Backstrom on the chin with a blatant elbow. Dale Hunter has made it clear that Backstrom is not feeling 100% and the team wants to take caution with his health, especially with all of the head injuries this year. The Capitals definitely do not want to end up like the Penguins, missing their top Center for close to a year. Who even knows if Sidney Crosby will return to the NHL EVER.
