STOCKHOLM, SWEDEN - OCTOBER 02: Nicklas Lidstrom of Detroit Red Wings in action during the 2009 Compuware NHL Premiere Stockholm match between Detroit Red Wings and St. Louis Blues at the Ericsson Globe on October 2, 2009 in Stockholm, Sweden. (Photo by Paul Gilham/Getty Images)

This past weekend was a big weekend for the Red Wings former captain.  In recent years, I considered Steve Yzerman as the former captain, but now Nicklas Lidstrom joins that company.  He announced his retirement from the NHL after 20 years on Thursday.  On Friday, he stopped by the early innings of the Yankees-Tigers game at Comerica Park.  He ended the night at Joe Louis Arena joining the Red Hot Chili Peppers on stage before a giant ovation.

RHCP drummer Chad Smith grew up in Bloomfield Hills, Michigan and has been a Wings fan ever since.  He sported a Wings logo on the back of his red, sleeveless shirt, red pants and a mouth a raunchy sailor would be proud of.  He introduced Lidstrom in front of a raucous Joe Louis crowd.

While on stage, Lidstrom, who will be moving back to his home country of Sweden in the near future, said that despite his great memories at The Joe, standing on stage with the Chili Peppers “might top it all.”

Here’s the unedited clip of Chad Smith introducing “Nicklas mother f****** Lidstrom”.  Don’t say I didn’t warn you about the language.

In Sunday’s Detroit Free Press, Lidstrom and his wife Annika took out an advertisment thanking Detroit.

“Before we leave, we wanted to express our gratitude to the wonderful people of metro Detroit for adopting us and making us feel at home for the past 21 years. … Detroiters — hockey fans or not — are downright decent and respectable people. … We will always cherish our time spent here and are proud to claim that we are also from Detroit.”

Detroit, and conceivably the whole NHL, won’t see another #5 – Nicklas “mother scratching” Lidstrom.
